The High Numbers

In between Pearl Jam dates, The Fastbacks headlined at The Vera in Groningen, The Netherlands. The "High Numbers" (Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Kurt Bloch and Mike Musburger of the Fastbacks using the Who's early name.) had a great time and rocked out in support of the Fastbacks.

The High Numbers at Vera

Vera Ticket We were not really sure if this was really gonna happen but just in case we got on the train and went to Groningen to see if the rumours were true...

I had not really been back to The Vera since I saw Pearl Jam play there 6 years ago in 1992, walking back in this venue made me realise how lucky I was to see Pearl Jam play these small clubs all these years ago and how lucky I was to be there that night.

The place didn't change much... I could still remember Eddie telling some girl that he would like to get back to The Vera some day because he liked the place so much...could not believe that day was finally here...could not believe I was there again...

It was somewhere around 10 when we saw The High Numbers climb up on the stage and I was right back in my "old" spot in front of the stage. They started off with "Can't Explain" followed by "The Kids Are Alright."

All three of them looked like they were having a good time playing the songs together. Of course there were some people there who could not stop yelling Eddie's name but they were ignored by the band and by the other people there.

After "The Kids Are Alright" Kurt says, "Alright! Let's do Lukin!" And Eddie answers, "Well, as long as I'm here, I might as well promote the new record. This one is dedicated, as always, to Mr. Matt Lukin from Mudhoney...he's been here before."
Kurt: "He's a bad man."
Eddie: "We have ALL been here before."
They play Lukin and at the end Kurt says, "It's a short one!"
"Not For You" was the next song followed by "Rearviewmirror," after which Eddie explains why he's supporting The Fastbacks that night.

Eddie: "Well, the Fastbacks have been supporting the band that I am in all this time on this little tour that we're doing, so I thought it was only fair that I did the same...umm...thanks for... Actually I was just looking for an excuse to come back. We have one more little ditty here. I hope you enjoy it." [Naked Eye]

During this song some smart ass yells "Fuck you!!" and Ed tells him "Yeah, you too. It`s no big deal. I mean I don't HAVE to be here. If that's okay with you, I dunno... I`m just gonna finish the song and...umm...watch The Fastbacks."
[We listened to the tape and we think we heard the guy's girlfriend yelling, "Ed-dee, Ed-dee." - Synergy]

What I don`t understand is why people like this would wanna ruin it all for the rest. I`m really in favor of NOT serving any alcohol during concerts... that would make life so much easier... not to mention less annoying.

After this song, the three guys left the stage as quiet and fast as they came on. Eddie did come back on stage with the Fastbacks to sing and play along on the last two songs "Girl's Eyes" & "Leaving Here."

That was the end of a special night... I am happy I got to spent it with friends I made through Pearl Jam. :-)

Special thanks to Andrew & Alex for making me go to Groningen and for Dat-taping all the European shows they went to...and for sharing them with everyone else! You Guys Rule!
