The show started at eight o'clock. Eddie Vedder, alone on the stage with
his guitar, is playing "The Kids Are Alright". The crowd can't keep
quiet. During the song, played so sweetly, everybody is screaming and
calling loudly, "Eddie." The noise is deafening. After this unforeseen
moment, Eddie introduces the supporter's show. The Fastbacks, Seattle's
friends, play half an hour of good rock n'roll but when the five Pearl
Jams begin to play together, the gap is enormous.
The first song was
Long Road but the beautiful Go, the second track, is an explosion of
powerful sound. The balance is perfect, I can hear all the instruments
and Eddie's voice clearly . The temperature of the hall is rising up and
the scream of the crowd is very loud expecially when the group plays the
hits and all the people are singing with Eddie in unison. Corduroy,
Jeremy, Alive and a beautiful long version of Rearviewmirror heats up
the Forum. The staging is deliberately naked but the lights are hot and
great, there are a lot of candles over the amplifier and the effect is
magic ("hi Kurt!"). Everybody is singing, dancing and crying with Eddie
especially when he plays Better Man in the second part of the concert. It is
one of the best moments of the show. This version, played with a
particular pathos, had a great success; the crowd is singing perfectly
during the performance and Eddie was visibly touched.
After two hours of great music and lots of ooooh, the group leaves for
the first encore: They play five songs: Once, In My Tree, Nothingman,
Smile and Porch. At the second encore, they finished the show with Yellow
Ledbetter, a great song. At eleven o'clock the lights switch on. For me
and for these wonderful people, it will be impossible to forget this incredible
evening.
