Prague Concert
by: deedy@shore.net (Conal)
I flew to Prague to meet with friends and see Pearl Jam. The venue was
the Sports Hall and it was general admission. I arrived at 8PM and was
amazed at the throng of people waiting in front of the gate. It took us
about 15 minutes to decifer the sign that said the concert would begin
at 10PM.
When the gates opened, we rushed to a choice viewing area and
watched the stage crew hastily preparing the stage. Eddie came on stage
at 10:20 to thank the truckers who made it through a snow storm in the
Alps and to the crew who set up the stage in about an hour. He said the
show was very close to being canceled.
So they skipped the Fastbacks and broke into "Go."
Instantaneously the surfing began. For 2.5 hours the surfing was
constant. Pearl Jam's music (mixed with 75 cent beers) had me and the
crowd worked to a feverish pitch all concert. The sound was clear and
LOUD.
The band hit highpoints with Red Mosquito, Rearviewmirror, Black
and Alive. The encore started with Eddie asking Stone if the crowd was
as loud last time he was there (with Neil Young). He replied "I don't
think so" and Eddie introduced "Stone's Prague singing debut," Mankind.
Eddie took requests for "SOLAT" and "Immortality." He climbed the
lightset during "Immortality" with a nervous stagehand below him. He
dedicated Smile to someone in the audience who was holding a sign, "today
is my 20th birthday." He said, "I hope this makes you smile." Also
interesting, Stone and Jeff switched guitars for this song. They
finished the concert with "Porch".
For me it was a concert to never forget even though Luftansa lost
my Prague/Budapest PJ poster.
