My Jam Dream In Rome: For The Dissident In Everyone
by: Laura (vitald@mbox.medianetis.it)
The show started at 8 o'clock with The Fastbacks and after 45 minutes we were ready for Pearl Jam when Vedder and his magic band appeared in the dark. The simplicity of the stage disarmed us with its incredible charm...just some wax candles were disposed on the amplifiers. Eddie, replying to our acclamations, started a very heartfelt version of RELEASE in the dark. A fantastic version of ANIMAL gave us "fuel" enough for all the evening.
During IN MY TREE, we had one of the best moments of the show. Eddie stopped in the middle of the stage and began a cool dance with his arms! We had a lot of fun too every time he drank from a bottle on the stage, 'cos he always replied to us saying, "IT'S WATER!" and drinking for us. A stupefacent version was the CORDUROY one, but when the band started IMMORTALITY no one remained untouched by the song. At the same time no one will forget Eddie's words about friends before SMILE.
Before the encore they played a marvelous ALIVE, exciting versions of STATE OF LOVE AND TRUST, W.M.A., HUNGER STRIKE, BETTER MAN...and an unbelievable version of SOMETIMES. In fact, Irons stopped the drums and Vedder told us he had never imagined our warmth. After the encore, he admitted that it was a "lucky night" for them and encouraged by our hands, they played a second part of the show, including a Neil Young cover. The Palaeur was in a state of total frenzy when he picked up a flag of the Rome's soccer team hanging it on the drums. Although we became thousands of hummers, they didn't play other songs. I have no doubt that Vedder, Gossard, Ament, McCready and Irons were FANTASTIC. We hadn't the words to defy our feelings, and I cannot forgive mine. I'm sure we've never felt something deeper. JAM... THANKS TO BE!
