Tibetan Freedom Concert
The second show, which I attended, opened with the monks chanting. We had received a copy of the acts and order of the show, and when we saw the first 15 minute slot named "Eddie," we knew the deal. We headed over to the "red" stage and waited. Almost no one else was there. We were right on the barricade when they quietly got on stage and played their newer version of Corduroy. During the first minute, about 10,000 people gathered behind us. They then played a quiet version of Yellow Ledbetter, and Rockin' In The Free World. I believe it was during Rockin', that Eddie says something to the effect of, "Just about all of us have needed help at some time, and right now they need our help." He said a little more, but that was the jist of it. Actually, right when he started to speak, he said, "Can I ask you a favor? Can someone lend me 5 bucks. I'm good for it!" to which someone loaned him $20 after being pulled over the barricade. We watched a good portion of the other acts, and moved closer for Stipe/Mills. About halfway through their set, Stipe welcomed Eddie & Mike back to the stage for Long Road, which Stipe sung most of, with Eddie backing up gently. McCready stayed on after that for another song or two. It was really a beautiful show, a beautiful day, and a good inclusive cause to support. Free Tibet.
