June 23, 1998, Fiddler's Green, Denver, Colorado
Petersenmt@aol.com They opened with Long Road, and although most didn't seem to know the song, it was fantastic. Then they jumped right into Corduroy and had every single perosn jumping and screaming. Hail Hail was started with "Is there room for all of us," and Ed opened his arms to the crowd - what an unbelievable song. The band played more No Code tracks than I would have suspected, but it was great since they didn't make it for that tour. Another surprise was Dissident, breaking into the archives it seemed like, but that is absolutely my favorite cut from Vs and everyone was really into it. Then Ed gave a little speech about "if you're going to have a concert, or any large gathering of people, why not do it a mile high? But, even if you are a mile high, it can be nice to get a little higher." Something like that anyway- of course, Given to Fly followed magically. Next came MFC which is a song I have only one problem with - it is way too short! Much better live than on the album, too. A while later he introduced Pilate by saying it was similar to the song they'd just played (In Hiding), in that it was about living each day to it's fullest. I was very excited to hear this and I really hadn't expected to. He introduced I Got Shit by saying "I'm up here calling audibles like John Elway," which the crowd loved. Then he said "This one is a 34 post right go out and turn at the fire hydrant." On Do the Evolution Ed skipped ahead of himself by about a verse the first time they got to the chorus, and he and the band did an excellent job of working the song to get all of it's magic in. It was this song where the unbelieveable ability of this band to flat out rock came through. Then came Alive, but before that - a speech. ed said something like : "Normally, we look down and we just go ahead and play it, but tonight I want to say a few things. It seems that in my life, and apparently I'm not alone, I have had difficulty with some family members, especially father figures, and there's a common bond I have with people. But, I also recognize that there are a lot of very good fathers out there, and so I want to dedicate this song to them for father's day, a day late." Ed was one day off, but no one cared because Alive followed, and then Black, to close the set. The encore began with Wishlist and the mirror ball, which was really almost spooky - and to hear that many people sing along. Before Leaving Here he mentioned that everyone there had been charged fifty cents too much - a parking fee the band hadn't agreed to. Hence, he said, the band was donating $8500 of our money to the Gateway battered Women's shelter, a great gesture, and one that shelter needs desperately. I love PJ for these types of gestures as much as their music sometimes. Also, Ed Mike Stone spent about a minute deciding their order on leaving here, and then Stone completely goofed anyway. he laughed and pointed at himself, so they tried it again and he got it. That is a wonderful song. And then, for a second encore, Ed came out alone to play I am a Patriot, for two guys in front with a huge sign. I had never heard this, but it was amazing - as was the entire night. Thank you to Mike, Ed, Jeff, Stone, and esp. matt who did a great job filling in - and to all the crew. Hope to see you all soon! Chris Tweedy Pearl Jam went on at 8:45 pm. Although the show seemed a bit shaky and unfocused through the first half hour, even during Corduroy and Hail Hail, it picked up enormous energy and steamrolled through the end. Not a *lot* of energy from Stone & Jeff, maybe a reaction to the reserved seating that slowed the crowd down a lot, not much moshing to speak of down front. Matt Cameron sounds great! I believe the Daughter tag was an ode to Frank Black, "the Devil is six, Man is five, God is seven ..." a Pixies song from Doolittle, can't remember the title I didn't tape, but I think the show ran about 1 hour 50 minutes. Highlights for the crowd were the obvious ones ... Even Flow, Daughter ... everyone loved Do The Evolution ... Alive, Black ... both encores were the highlights of the entire show, I felt those five songs held together and got better crowd action than the rest of the set combined. Leaving Here was great. And, of course, Patriot was astonishing ... my first time live for that one ... amazing. Can't wait for Alpine Valley! Steven Steinman (sjsteinman@hotmail.com) Sorry didn't know the first song...(nor did most of the crowd)... Corduroy - warming up ----- HAIL HAIL- watch out.....they went from warm to on fire..... "Is there room for all of us", crowd engaged, "bandaged hand in hand." Eddie makes like bandages around his hands, so do many in the crowd.......growls...... Dissident was unexpected and a great performance, he really seemed to be letting us know "escape is NEVER the safest path" Given To Fly - MFC (my favorite song on Yield) were paired beautifully together......at this point you can really feel the music and evening coming together... Do The Evolution....crowd, finally some movement, they tore this up...tight and loud...... They revisited Alive & Black, very nice.... RVM..."I am not about to give thanks, (fuck no) or apologize" I have to say Leaving here was a kick ass tune.....I'd never heard it before and it was upbeat and rock'n...... The show was grand, I've seen them here in Denver 1st at the Paramount, then the ultimate venue Red Rocks (disappointed they didn't play there again......)..They did a great variety and I have to say the "new" drummer fit like a glove..... Quote of the show, this may not be exact but " even though we are playing at a Mile Hi, we can always get higher, you guys enjoy yourselfs"...thanx Eddie we did... Sweet show.......dont miss it...... |
