July 7, 1998, Tingley Coliseum, Albuquerque, New Mexico
Santiago Gutierrez (santoguto@mailexcite.com) The band played with such energy and really looked to be having a great time. Eddie was constantly talking and even said that "Alive" was for the people in the first 10 feet from the stage, because they were still surviving the crush intact. The songs were really well played and I was in awe of Matt's sheer talent, because he has taken over the songs, and he has added a musical element to many of them that I have never heard before. He really knows when to play and when not to play to bring out pauses in the songs that are beautiful. That was the best part of the experience for me because he is my favorite drummer and I have been wanting to see him live for years, and what better way than with Pearl Jam. Stone was wonderful even though he seemed to be having trouble with his guitar effects pedal throughout the night, he even apologized to the crowd about how he was 'sorry for slowing the show down'. Eddie did a funny thing before "Jeremy", he 'Shhhhed' the crowd for about a minute and then pointed at Jeff when all was quiet and made the 'listen' gesture. Then the familiar chords began and everybody went nuts and Eddie laughed. I was really impressed with his voice tonight because he sang the best that I have ever heard him sing. He held all of the high notes and didn't scream out the words at all. Mike was unconscious in his playing. He is such a talented guitarist, and he did some incredible solos, even while! running in complete circles around the stage near the end of the show while everybody else was just standing. The best part of the night was right before "Yellow Ledbetter", the band looked pretty tired and were looking to finish when they saw this huge banner that somebody had made that just said, 'Yellow Ledbetter' on it. Eddie and Jeff smiled and then Eddie announced that they were going to play one more song and that all of us fans could thank the people who made that banner. Then they all got really relaxed and just chilled during the song. Jeff sat on the speaker boxes and just strummed along while Mike played next to him. The band really fed off of the crowd and we off them, and it was by far the best concert that I have ever been to. Of course, do you expect any less from Pearl Jam? I am glad that they still are obviously having a great time playing these songs and that they still have the fire burning inside them to go and play their hearts out every night. Thanks PJ for playing sooo well. Tim (tim@staticspot.com) Around the time they played "Jeremy" we started to impress them. Sure, Eddie started "Jeremy", but we finished it for him. Then when they busted out with "Do the Evolution" you'd think all hell broke loose in that tiny barn [really just a sad arena] we call Tingley. Yes, then it was lighter time with "Better Man." When PJ's set was done and they walked off stage and in usual fashion the crowd yelled for about five or seven minutes and then they came back on stage. The encore was fabulous, they never lost their energy. "Even Flow" was just like "Jeremy" because of Eddie startin' and us finishin'. They played "Rockin' In The Free World" so beautifully. Now, that was going to be the last song they played for the night, but then behind I noticed about 10 people holding about a 20 wide banner that said, "Yellow Ledbetter". Eddie, seeing the effort these people had put into try to get them to notice this long banner, said that they would play. I was shocked! Has Pearl Jam ever played "Yellow Ledbetter" after "Rockin' In The Free World"? Have they ever played any song after "Rockin' In The Free World"? I don't know, but this concert was truly a treat to us in Albuquerque, NM. Did Pearl Jam like playin' here? I think so. Eddie told us that it was "a great place to get away", he did a little stage diving, shook some hands, gave his tambourine to a member of the crowd, and said what I'm sure he says everywhere, "You guys are one of the best crowds we've seen on this tour or any of 'em." Yeah, and during "Yellow Ledbetter" the guys just seemed to kick back and enjoy us and our energy because, well, PJ had never been here, so it was a new experience for almost everyone. We only ask that they come and visit us some day. |
