July 8, 1998, Veteran's Memorial Stadium, Phoenix, Arizona
Adam (76605.1664@compuserve.com) As the time passed, more and more people showed up, and we migrated to the entrance ramps to secure ourselves a place in line. It was sweltering outside, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky to shade us, nor the slightest breeze to cool us. Some bright entrepreneur decided to make a few bucks selling overpriced ice cold lemonade to the mob of sweaty Phoenicians. A radio station was set up in front of the arena, and they played some PJ tunes to get everybody psyched for the concert. At one point they had a group of people singing along to "Elderly Woman..." on the air. Pretty soon, both the ramps on our side of the building were packed shoulder to shoulder with guys on one side of the handrail, girls on the other. People began to refer to the female security guard behind the barricades as the "line Nazi" for her militant commands to the crowd. Finally, they started letting people through. My friend had a little pocketknife on his key chain, and the line Nazi refused to let him in. So he said, "Here, you want it?" She took the knife and let him in. She wouldn't let another guy in because he had some prescription medicine. After the frisking fiasco was over, we found a seat and waited some more. After Spacehog finished their set, the stage crew quickly removed Spacehog's gear and replaced it with Pearl Jam's. Soon everything was ready for the band to come out and make some noise. PJ came out and played a great rendition of "Corduroy." Next was "Hail, hail." I don't remember much about that song because we spent most of it walking away from our seats into the floor area. Next came "Brain of J", "Tremor Christ", and "In Hiding." The guitars on "In Hiding" sounded great. "Even Flow" sent the crowd into a regular frenzy. As if by some supernatural force, holes would open up in the crowd as people bounced around inside like little molecules. After "Given to Fly", we were treated to an enthusiastic "Leatherman." Next came "Wishlist." Everybody seemed to like the mirror ball. Eddie ended the song by singing, "I wish I was thankful for everything I've got." "Jeremy" was awesome. After "Spin the Black Circle", Eddie makes a joke about how we probably don't have any vinyl records here because they all would melt. It sounded great when he used some lyrics to "W.M.A." as the tag for "Daughter." Next came "I got Id.", "Elderly Woman...", "Rearviewmirror", "Black", and "Better Man." For an encore they played "Go", "Do the Evolution", "Alive", "Immortality", and "Leaving Here." Mike's solo on "Immortality" was way better than on the album track. When Eddie said that "Leaving Here" was going to be the last song, the crowd seemed a little displeased. Then he said something like, "Let's not be sad now. Let's reflect on the pleasant time we've spent together." At one point--I'm not sure during which song--some freak in front of me who thinks the world is his urinal decided to take a leak in the middle of the packed coliseum floor. He left a puddle on the concrete floor for others to step in. Overall, it was an awesome concert. I was a little disappointed that they didn't finish with "Yellow Ledbetter", but the band probably gets sick of playing it at the end of every concert. Thank you Pearl Jam for the great music. And thank you Synergy for the great website. Cbw86@aol.com When Pearl Jam took the stage and started off with Corduroy, the fans went crazy. Things calmed down a bit as the band blasted through Hail Hail and Brain of J. I would have to say all the songs from the Ten CD got the entire crowd going. I mean everybody was singing and dancing, just enjoying themselves. The songs from Yield sounded great in concert. In particular In Hiding and Given to Fly, these came through very clear and Ed sounded great. One treat at the concert was following Daughter, they went into WMA which I don't believe they play very often in concert, this was pretty cool. When Ed talked he was very funny. Most of his comments were about how "fucking hot" it was. Overall the show was great. I mean there is nothing better than seeing Pearl Jam in concert. In fact I think I may try to go to a show in California in a few days. The only thing that sucked was after the encore the lights stayed off for about a minute but the crowd was totally quiet. I think if we had been louder they may have came out and played Yellow Ledbetter or another song, this would have made it even better. I can't complain though, Pearl Jam is the best group ever to perform live. |
