July 22, 1998, Memorial Stadium, Seattle, Washington
Rob K. There are trees behind the stage and the sun is blocked out behind them. Just as the stadium begins to get shadowy, the untitled track (known as The Color Red) on Yield begins to play. The crowd is going nuts. I'm about to lose it..the anticipation has got me all worked up. I'm in the stands not far up from the field, on Mike McCready's side, and the view of the stage is nice. The Color Red begins to fade and the crowd begins to roar even louder. Out comes Pearl Jam! All the guys take their place on stage, and there is one lone drum smack from Matt, them *wham!* the band kicks into Last Exit! Immediately the crowd in front of the stage begins to jump around, and body surfers are going everywhere! It was very energetic both on the stage and in the crowd. It was like the band and audience were just exchanging power. It was this way the entire show, and it was a sight to behold! Up next was Animal! I was really excited when I realized what song they were playing, because Animal only appeared on the setlists at the beginning of the tour, and then it wasn't played any more. This song is so powerful, and I was jumping up and down in the stands, just loving it. Spin The Black Circle and Brain Of J. were next, and they were both VERY intense. Eddie was screaming and jumping around, Mike and Stone were going ape up on stage, Jeff was jammin' and Matt was just beating the snot out of the drums! After Brain of J. Ed says to crowd, Are you the same f*ckers from yesterday?.......Actually, I think you're better....Yesterday we were home, today we're home free, so..... then they break right into Faithfull. This was incredible! It sounded so good, that I think this version should have been put on Yield! Wow. Red Mosquito was up next, and I really enjoyed this song. It was played very well, and it was fun to sing along to it. Cool! Next up was Given To Fly, and before the band started it, Ed goes "This one's dedicated to the birds" and he points up to the sky where some seagulls were flying over. It was amazing and I finally felt more in touch with this song now that I've heard it live. MFC and Habit were next, and they were fast paced and roaring. Right before Habit Eddie says Alright, hope this next song don't happen to you... This song got everyone going...there is about a ten second pause in the song and many people start cheering and clapping thinking the song is over, then they explode with energy picking up right where they left off!! Great talent..and it was awesome! Kickin' versions of Not For You and Daughter are up next. Daughter has a tag on it called Beginning To See The Light and it is very cool. Even Flow is next, and the crowd really is pumped during this one. Everyone seems to be singing along, especially during the part where there are the Whooooo's!! and Ahhh yeahhhh's!!. Mike McCready does awesome solos the whole show, and on Even Flow they were beyond words!! After Even Flow Ed says "Alright, uh, this ones dedicated to a special person who's on the side tonight. His name's Billy, it's called 'Off He Goes', it's for him" and they begin the song. It was really cool, and I was surprised how great it was live! After that song Ed says "Hey that's Mike McCready. He just walked by, Mike McCready. Mike McCready just walked by. There's f*ckin' Mike McCready"... Mike seemed to be embarrassed by Ed's acknowledgment, and was really funny running around. Ed says Here's another little story... and Better Man begins. It was wonderful. Lukin and Present Tense were next. Both were amazing. I especially enjoy the break out of the band at the end of Present Tense...it's just groovy, man! So far this show has been so great that I still don't feel that I've given it the credit it deserves...the band was ON and it was the best thing I've ever seen!! After the awesome Present Tense, Stone speaks into the mic and says, "Alright, we'll have to kick it up a notch here....with me!" and Mankind begins. This songs rocks. Stone is pretty dang good at singing it and stuff, I thought. People were very responsive to Stone's song, and it was cool seeing that. Alive is next and the crowd just ROARS. This song was amazing, and it had to be one of the most powerful songs of the night! The crowd was so involved, and it was awesome to see the stadium lit up, and see everyone....arms being thrown in the air, and the crowd surfers...people able to stand up on top of everyone down in the pit area...it was so dang cool! During Mike's amazing solo, the crowd reached deafening levels of sound..it was the most awesome thing to experience. When Stone mentioned 'kicking it up a notch' ...boy was he right!! Ed says Stone and Jeff just wanted to tell me how much they're gonna miss me after the tour is over...and that would be...a joke after Alive. On my recording I couldn't tell if Ed said they aren't gonna miss me or they are gonna miss me..it's a big difference I know, but it's hard to understand. Then came Corduroy, Hail, Hail and Do The Evolution!! All I can say about these songs is YEAH!!!. Do The Evolution was so intense I thought Ed would have to sit down and take a breather..it was beyond belief. Then came....Porch!! I was shocked when I heard the opening line. This song was very emotional, and intense. The jam in the song was stunning. The jam rose up to the breaking point and the Yeaaah-aahh-ahhh...yeah--ahhh-ahhh..yeahhh-ahh-ahhh's at the end were so gripping. It was the perfect way to end the set...WOW. The band left the stage to a roaring crowd..and the stadium kept roaring until the band came back out for the first encore. Wishlist, Leatherman, Leaving Here, and F*ckin' Up made up the first encore. And it is hard for me to describe since I was so lost in the moment. It was just incredible...from the recording I'm listening to of it, I'm amazed at how much energy the band put into this encore. Someone had tied the puppet known as Mr. Pickles up to the stage rafters, and was pulling the string to make it look like he was dancing in the air next to Mike...Mike comes over and starts whaming the puppet with his guitar during the song and starts spinning around like crazy with the puppet all tangled in the guitar. It was so entertaining! Ed also goes over and tries to hit it with the mic stand, and it was cool. Each song was spectacular. The band left after the last song to loud, loud cheers from everyone..and a little while later came back out with the house lights on to play Yellow Ledbetter. It was awesome. I loved the way it sounded. Everyone was having a blast. At the end Mike incorporated a little bit of The Star Spangled Banner in his solo..it was very cool. This show was simply amazing. There were 28 songs played, and it was full of energy the whole time. During both Seattle shows there was an airplane flying overhead with a message tail trailing behind it reading Welcome Home Pearl Jam from 99.9 KISW...it was cool. These two Seattle shows were my first Pearl Jam concerts ever and they were beyond even what I wrote in this fanview! There are really cool people at Pearl Jam concerts too (Hi Mug! Hi Kat!). I hope this brought a little bit of the concert into your head...it was kind of lengthy but I hope you enjoyed it. Thank you Pearl Jam!!!!!! Emily N.
