Matt Birkett (3r4myno@cmich.edu): The band came out and wowed us with a great opener of Release. I knew they would turn it up next and they rocked it to DTE , STBC, and Brain of J. Super high energy.-- Next, Ed introduced Dissident by dedicating it to a girl named Monica. I never really got caught up in Given to Fly, but after seeing it live twice this summer, I truly appreciate this song. The guys just rocked the house with this. Next was a great rendition of Corduroy with the green backdrop. I don't know why, it just always is green. After corduroy, Ed pauses and says, "this feels like we are playing a frat party on a friday night, no not a frat party a keg party, no not a keg party, a pot party. well if you're gonna smoke it, you gotta leave the state. if you gotta leave the state, you need a mini fast car." Then they ripped into an intense version of MFC. Wishlist was good and they brought the disco ball along again. At the end of the song, they stop, then crank it back up for about two more verses, where Ed sings "i wish i wish i wish i knew this song". The band all talks and Ed says that they are changing it up from the setlist and this next song "is just for you". With that I thought we would get the debut of U, but got Elderly Woman instead. Rearviewmirror was a good 10 minutes long and it was incredible. The band let it really hang out here and the perfect use of strobe lights really raised the intensity. I had sweat pouring off my head I was so into it! They return for the encore and Ed steps up to the mike and sings a line from a famous song "we've only just begun"--then they rip into Hail Hail. Strong version. The whole encore was excellent but the show was put into a class of it's own with the final song. Ed starts talking about love, falling out of love to fall back in love, etc.... and then he says "i've fallen in love with this guy tonight. come on up and help me." So this dude gets on stage totally pumped and shakes Eddie's hand and then he starts getting booed. You see, this guy had on a University of Michigan shirt. The concert was held at Michigan State. Eddie, realizing his mistake said," oh, i didn't notice you were wearing the wrong color. you're gonna have to go. bye." And he made him leave. He then asked a girl to come up and help. This girl brought her tape recorder on stage with her and Eddie grabbed it. He took it and whispered into it for about 10 seconds and then gave it back. I am sure everyone in there wants to know as badly as I do, what was said. Anyway, then Ed said that the band just heard this song yesterday and he doesn't know the words yet so she had to hold them for him. The song, Soldier of Love by Arthur Alexander, ROCKED. I have been singing it since the lights went up. The chorus is extremely familiar, but I honestly don't know if I have heard the song before. "let down your arms............. and open up to me" Anyway, if you ever see it on a boot, buy it. The girl ended up singing the end of the song with Ed, arms around each other. [Amanda's fanview]. Ed talked for about two minutes after the show about how we should make sure that they never ban concerts at the Breslin because of the Michigan live music censorship bill. He closes with, "i'm a rock star, i should be able to show my penis." And he walks off. Very good show overall. 8 out of 10. PS- If you are on the floor and everyone else is standing on the floor, don't be the one guy to stand on your chair. It really fucks up the view for everyone else behind you. |
