Jon K. (kovalci2@pilot.msu.edu): Eddie "the barber" Vedder!!!
Well it's been over four years since I last saw Pearl Jam in Detroit and they did not disappoint! The guys put together one hell of a show. Some Highlights: They began with a melting version of "long road." MFC was changed to read, "there's a lot to be said about detroit." Rearviewmirror was about 12 or 13 minutes long because a guy jumped on stage, security grabbed him, Ed brought him back, ripped the hell out of him for his long hair and then Ed got a pair of scissors and cut it off!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it! It was pretty damn funny. They also knocked off a few of the classics like E-Flow, Jeremy & Alive and then moved on to some rarer stuff. PJ shocked the hell out of me by playing an amazing version of "footsteps!!!!" and closed the show with "fuckin' up!" An AMAZING SHOW. They even played "smile." Well this was my last show on this tour. I hope to see PJ again soon, but the memories of this tour will last a lifetime. Thanks PJ! Alex Kondovski (alexkondovski@yahoo.com): Mag76er@aol.com: Some highlights include: A lunatic fan rushed on the stage during RVM, got pulled off by a security guard, then Ed asked the guard to bring him back. Ed ordered him to his knees, then said, "i hate these fuckers who run on the stage, especially when they have such a stupid haircut. you're probably canadian." - he was from Toronto. This was all going on with Jeff, Stone, Mike, and Matt still jamming. Ed then ran backstage and came back with a scissors and proceeded to cut off about 8 inches of this guys long ass hair. He then held up the guys hair for all to see. The place was so loud I think I lost my hearing. Every song was played to perfection. Long Road sounded beautiful to open up. I lost it when they played Tremor Christ. It's not very often that you get to hear that one. I loved that they played a lot of rare tunes, and I think the dedicated fans really appreciated it. All Those Yesterdays sounded amazing live. Footsteps is one of my favorite songs, and it rocked. They were really into Better Man and it sounded soooooo good...then Ed threw in a shortened, sweet version of Crazy Mary which ruled. Mike played behind his back for a while...damn is he talented. Stone and Jeff were amazing, and Matt is the best drummer around. The crowd was really into ALive, Jeremy and Even Flow. They played a lot from Vs. which was great. They closed the show with Smile and Fuckin' Up , two rare songs that were just a fitting end to a perfect show. The cherry on top was when I caught Matt's drumstick at the end of the show. There's not much I can say after that. Best show of all time. They are really at the top of their game right now, they sound so fuckin' good. And they put in such a great effort, night in - night out. I can't say how much I appreciate their music; I love 'em. Matthew D Birkett (3r4myno@cmich.edu): They absolutely rocked tonight and could not have possibly done any better. This was my sixth show and I give it the Number 1 ranking. Even better than Soldier Field! They opened with a stellar version of Long Road and then right into some high energy tunes like Brain of J, DTE, and Last Exit. Mike was almost hyper tonight. He was running around the stage all evening, and I have never seen a better guitar performance. He is truly the hidden star on this team. Mike is a good barometer of how intense your show will be. If he is "on", then IT is "on". The tag at the end of Daughter was a Cheap Trick song. The tag at the end of Better Man was Crazy Mary. Given To Fly had the moving clouds on the backdrop. The band went into a sweet version of Rearviewmirror, and then during the jam in the middle, they all turned their backs to us as if to look at us through their rearviewmirrors. With their backs to the crowd, they didn't see a fan get up on stage. Ed turned and saw him, and then the guy bumped into Jeff's back. Startled, Jeff turned and hit the guy. Not an all out punch, but an understandable move for someone who was shocked to see some crazy bumping him. Security started to haul him off and Ed told them to bring him back. (The whole time the Rearview jam continues although quietly.) "on your knees!" orders Ed. With the guy on his knees Ed says, " this fucker has been trying to get on stage all night, and he has really pissed me off!" Then he starts to rip on the guy. Jeff walks up and grabs his hair. I guess he had a really fucked up hair cut because Ed said, "what are you doing with your hair? either long or short!" Ed walks to the side of the stage and talks to someone. He walks back to the middle of the stage and hoists up in the air a pair of scissors!! He walks up to the guy and with the guy still on his knees, chops off all his hair. He then hands the guy his hair and says something to the effect, "beat it." Ed retakes his position and the guys hammer out the most intense Rearviewmirror I have ever heard. A great encore concludes the wonderful song Footsteps. AWESOME! After they left the stage, the crowd wouldn't let up. You have to remember, we are not entitled to two encores. You must earn the second. You must make the band feel guilty if they don't return for a second. We just would not go away for about six minutes straight. Intense. They return with Smile and a smokin' version of Fuckin'' Up. This song was everything I thought it would be live. Mike, once again, stole the show with this song. (5 stars, A+) Charles Shuler: |
