August 25, 1998, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania; Star Lake Amphitheatre
Kelly Flanagan: Thanks to the fan club, we also had seats in the 3rd row...CENTER STAGE! So, Eddie came out to announce Iggy Pop, but instead he played a heart-wrenching rendition of Throw Your Arms Around Me...it was so beautiful. When they finally took the stage, it was obvious that they totally enjoyed themselves. Now when they play it's like they can just be comfortable and they want the fans to be happy too....which they definitely got. Eddie made one comment that since it had been so long since they had last been to Pittsburgh (he said it was like 1993)...that they would definitely deliver tonight. With songs like I Got Id and Rockin' in the Free World, they played for a good 2 hours. Since they encourage fans to tape-record their concerts, I brought along my portable recorder and held it high above my head the entire night. At one point, noticing that I was doing that, Eddie looked right at me, smiled, and waved by making his hand look like mine holding the recorder. That just goes to show that this band looks out and cares for their fans as the number one priority. If they keep going at this rate, they will just continue to keep a following of totally devout fans that will stick out almost any situation that they go through! Craig Kebisek (windberrambler@hotmail.com): They quickly blasted through Brain of J, Last Exit, and Corduroy. Things slowed down a bit with I Got Id and Faithfull. Even Flow and Jeremy picked the power back up. Eddie made a few comments, then played MFC. Next was an excellent Rearviewmirror. They added to the end of this song, but I was too busy avoiding the people sliding in the mud to hear what he said. Wishlist was next, as the mirror ball was lowered onto the stage. Then came Daughter with additional lyrics at the end, including Outshined by Soundgarden. They quickly rocked into Do The Evolution, which was followed by more commentary by Eddie. He led into the evolution of growing wings and Given To Fly was played. Elderly Woman and an excellent version of Alive finished off the first set. After a short break, the band returned. Eddie carried a t-shirt (presumably thrown from the crowd) that said "no" on one side and "way" on the other. Of course, No Way was played, followed by Animal, Hail Hail, Not For You, Nothingman, and Black. The band then went all-out on a killer version of Rockin' in the Free World, and closed the night with Yellow Ledbetter. Eddie made a note that Pearl Jam hadn't played Pittsburgh since 1993 or so, and changed several lyrics around to include the city. For example, the line in MFC became "there's a lot to be said for pittsburgh." The incredible singing of Eddie Vedder and the trademark guitar solos of Mike McCready highlighted the show. It was well worth the wait to finally see them live. Pearl Jam is truly one of the greatest bands, especially when seen live, that there has ever been. PjLukin980@aol.com: |
