Dimitri Zafiroglu (dimitri@csoc.lvs.dupont.com): Onto Pearl Jam. I'm not going to run through the whole set. The songs are listed above. The highlights for me were the following: A tanscendent "release" that opened the show. I have never felt more joy in a song in my life. Pure magic; "daughter" with a little "wma" thrown in. The crowd sang the final words in a moment that will live long in my memory; "immortality" with a remarkable solo by Mike (the best guitarist around?) and ferocious drumming by Matt, who was superb all night; "off he goes," one of my all-time favorites. Too bad the crowd acted like they didn't know it; "hard to imagine," a nice surprise considering they were taking requests. At one point, Mike started the riff to "sweet home alabama." What that fan was thinking, I don't know. Eddie started a bit of "philadelphia freedom" that didn't get past the first verse.; "elderly woman" with the words "by god it's been so long/never dreamed you'd return." striking a very special chord with the crowd. It's been six years! Last, an absolutely astounding version of "porch" that ended the night. I don't know if it's possible to ask for a better version. It was purely improvised, with chants of "f@!ck yeah!" and other unmentionables. Some people were hoping they would get Ledbetter or RITFW. I don't see how they could have topped what they did tonight with "porch." In my opinion, it was the best version I've ever heard, and a incredible way to end the night. Thanks to Pearl Jam, their management, their sound crew, and everyone involved in the concert. Except Ticketmaster. A big thanks out to the Fan Club who gave us 7th row seats that allowed to see Eddie's smiling face the entire night. A truly wonderful event in my short life. Jakef100@aol.com: Pearl Jam opened its set with a riveting version of Release. It was really powerful, and started the show on a great note. Highlights of the show, for me, were "leaving here' and yes!!!!! , "Hard To Imagine", i was hoping they would play this rare classic, because they only have a few times before, and it is such a powerful song! they closed the show with "Porch" and in the jam part of the song eddie started yelling to the crowd and the crowd would mimic what he said, he started with something like hey or yey, and the crowd mimicked him, and moved on to "fuck", and then to "fuck you" and the crowd still mimicked him, it was a comical moment. another comical instance was when ed told us that his favorite episode of cops was in philadelphia. pearl jam haven't been to philadelphia in 7 or so years, and you could tell the crowd was happy to have them back. the crowd was into the show from start to finish, and the band responded to the positive vibes by playing a powerful, heartfelt performance. eddie said something like, "This is one of the best crowds we've ever played to in years". tonight was the greatest night of my life, and if pearl jam ever reads this, i just want to thank you. Anthony Azzarano (antazz@erols.com): From the opening strings of "release" to the final notes of "porch," Eddie and the crew never failed to satisfy. Just about every song a fan could ask for was part of the set, including the popular "alive," "black," and "daughter," and some less-heard but still great choices in "off he goes" and "last exit." As opposed to many other touring groups, Eddie didn't talk to the audience much, and that was a good thing. Not that Eddie doesn't have some interesting things to say (like his speech about the TV news) :-). But instead of dragging the show along with lots of talk, the band went from song to song without missing a beat, and mixed more relaxed songs with harder-edged ones. Another plus was the fact that, again unlike many bands, Pearl Jam doesn't play blocks of songs from a particular album...they mix up the tunes (and as a result, their styles) very well, not getting stagnant with the same thing over and over again. And the band mixes up their sets from night to night, so you don't see the same show if you see them more than once on the tour. That's a personal positive for me, as I'm seeing them again tomorrow night. In comparing them with other bands I've seen the last couple of months, there honestly is NO comparison. Pearl Jam stands at the head of the class. And based on the show tonight, there's no doubt that they'll continue to stay that way. Thanks for the best shows ever, guys...it was worth the 7-year wait we had here, and I can't wait to see you again tomorrow! |
