September 4, 1998, Greenville, South Carolina; Bi-Lo Center
Joe Valicenti (vertigo@clemson.edu): Immediately after Oceans, Vedder and company ripped into Do The Evolution and the crowd went crazy. The song was unbelievable and for the rest of the regular set the crowd was totally amazing. When Pearl Jam went into Jeremy a little later it had to have been the best version I have ever seen in my life. The whole Bi-Lo Center was rumbling from the crowd singing along. At one point Eddie let the crowd sing about a whole verse of Jeremy on its own. Finally at the exact same point in the song as in the video where Jeremy raises his arms and shouts, some guy stood up on the divider rail right in front of Eddie and raised his arms wide. The group went straight into Even Flow after that sending the crowd into a greater feeding frenzy. It got so intense that Eddie played Nothingman and told the crowd to relax and that this song was for just listening to. At one point Pearl Jam started In Hiding which was the all time high for me that night because that was the very song I requested for the concert from the Synergy site. Wishlist also rocked (gotta love that mirror ball). I couldn't make out Eddie's last wishes that well from where I was at but I think he finished up with something like, "i wish, i wish, i wish, i wish, oh hell i wish too much" But this may be incorrect. The group finished up its first set with an awesome version of Porch and while Mike jammed away Eddie pulled out a spotlight and started shining it around the crowd. In the first encore they played Go, and a cool version of Daughter which ended with a transition into a verse from W.M.A. Eddie at one point said to the floor that he had been singing to them too long and that he was going to sing to the people seated in the upper bowl behind the stage. So he turned around and sang Yesterdays to them. During the song a guy in a white shirt walked out onto the lower bowl seats behind the stage that had been cordoned off from the concert goers and waved to Eddie. Either before or after Yesterdays, Stone and Eddie had a little conference then Eddie turned to the crowd and said, "now stone is going to sing for you." Stone said something to the effect of, "i had to twist their arms a little but here we go." Stone then went right into Mankind with Eddie playing the Tambourine. PJ finished up the first encore with Fuckin' Up which was definitely a surprise to me but a pleasant one. Eddie had them turn the lights up for the song and was really getting into it and banging his head with a tambourine. :) Finally they band came out one last time and despite requests from the floor decided to play Indifference which they said they hadn't played in awhile. Sadly the concert ended there but it was a great night. My only qualm with the whole show was that Mike didn't come through very well on my side of the Stage (Right side, upper bowl), but I think that was mostly due to my location not the sound system. Other songs played that night included Elderly Woman, Given to Fly (great) and many others. Hopefully I will be getting a chance to go to the Knoxville show Sunday, so here's hoping and thanx guys for a great show. |
