September 6, 1998, Knoxville, Tennessee; Thompson-Boling Arena
Allen Robertson Jr. (versus@mindspring.com): A little later between songs, he started drinking a beer (I believe it was a Heineken), and he heard a guy in the front row saying something to him. Eddie said: "i'm not sure what you said, but it was either you wanted my pick, my drink, or my dick. now, i have some picks, and i have a few beers, but i have only one dick, and i'm keeping it to myself. so i'll have something to do in fuckin' knoxville." The crowd went nuts. Pearl Jam played some great songs, many I haven't heard played before on this tour (Lukin, Hard to Imagine, Last Kiss, Whipping). At the end of the concert, right before playing "leaving here", Eddie told the crowd that "girls here definitely kick ass!" as he was looking up at all of the banners that the girl's basketball team had won over the years (these were hanging in the arena). I was so sad that a brilliant performance had to end. Well, at least, I got an excellent recording of the event! Sharon Wells (ShaWells@aol.com): They jammed into a song I don't know the name of, something about a monkey going to heaven, which illustrated how Eddie's voice adds another dimension to their music~it is as much an instrument as a guitar or drums. Sometime toward the end of this set Eddie said they'd spent Saturday night in Knoxville and there wasn't much going on, so he stayed in his hotel room and watched Saturday Night Live and masturbated. Their first encore began with Go and moved to Rearviewmirror which was a highlight. Again, Eddie and Mike jammed together and just got the audience pumped. Do the Evolution kept us jumping and whipping our heads around and then they calmed things down with Black, although the audience was no less enthusiastic or appreciative. After singing Black Eddie said he thought that Black was the saddest song he'd ever heard, but that the saddest song was Last Kiss and he said he'd seen a car accident en route to Knoxville from Greenville that reminded him of that song. When Eddie came out for their second encore he said that looking around the arena that night he had come to the conclusion that "women kicked ass in this place, as they probably do in every place", referring to all the National Champion banners hanging around the arena, and they sang a great version of Leaving Here. This show was even better than the Greenville show. They just do what they do best! |
