Brian C. Baldwin (bbaldwin@hawaii.edu):
Let me start off by saying this is the best place for a
concert, outside in beautiful Hawaii. What more could you ask for? After a
good 40 minutes from Mudhoney, Pearl Jam takes the stage to loud
applause from just 5,000 people:
Corduroy - I love the pause they threw in the middle. I am a sucker for
breaks in songs.
Hail Hail -
Brain of J. - Eddie before the song: "Get comfortable, we're just warming
up."
Faithfull - This song sounded good and in the beginning of the song Eddie
points to someone and says, "This song is for you."
Red Mosquito -
After Red Mosquito Eddie says hi to the crowd and tells us that the
barricade up front is breaking and people might get hurt so take 2 steps
back. Someone throws a shirt and without missing a beat Eddie catches
it, and tells us "to reward that spectacular catch with 2 steps back".
He then says, "We must've got the Mariah Carey barricade." He also states
that it has been 4 years since the last visit so people could've
graduated from college so congrats to them, or could've gone to jail for
crack and got out of jail so congrats on that too.
Wishlist - lyrics at the very end: "I wish I was a 4 foot wave on the north
shore."
Even Flow - Before it started, Eddie says, "Fuck it. Let's go." and the song
sounded so good... lots of crowd singing.
MFC -
Before Habit they play some little ditty with nothing but Eddie on guitar
and a little drums, no title just made up on the spot.
Habit - In the middle: "speaking as one of the lucky ones."
Better Man -
Jeremy -
Eddie after Jeremy: "That wasn't the best version of that song, but this
song will be good. I promise."
Given To Fly -
Daughter -
After Daughter, Eddie makes note of the fact Mudhoney said they were
going to get married since Hawaii is a same-sex marriage state so Eddie
says, "Instead of a 4-way marriage, we're getting married to them too so it
can be an 8-way marriage." (Should be 9, Eddie. 4 in Mudhoney, 5 in PJ.)
"Anyone else wanna marry us? C'mon you get to fuck me...but don't forget
that means I get to fuck you too." ...to which Stone replies, "And on that
note, a song..."
Black - Sounded good... a few lyric changes though instead of "surrounded by...
some kids at play" it was "surrounded by...Hawaiians."
In Hiding - Man this sounded good.
After a short band conference, Eddie kicks the mic stand sending it flying
and walks to side stage, after the crowd cheers he picks up the mic and
says, "You shouldn't cheer on bad behavior" and tells the crowd he wanted
the night to be perfect and it was good, but not as he expected after so
long and it wasn't the crowd's fault, it was theirs.
Do The Evolution - I love this song.
Last Exit -
Encore:
Once -
Someone gets a banner on stage that says, "Save Ma'alea" and Eddie and
Mike hold it up. The crowd cheers, and Eddie says, "Good job, you got a
banner on stage and these people agree with it. Now start a petition or
burn a bulldozer or something. Tell them I sent you."
Smile -
Yellow Ledbetter
(Imadonut10@aol.com):
I arrived on Maui the day before and stopped by the venue on my way from
the airport. I was surprised and excited with how small the place was - outdoors,
relatively small stage which was being set up. Grass in front of stage for moshers
with bleachers behind grass area. Arena was to hold 5,000. I asked someone
when we would be allowed in/and or to line up. She said, "I don't know, people
in Maui don't line up." Well she was right. they opened the gates around 5
for the 7 o'clock show. Most people did not start arriving until 5. Of course
I had been waiting in line. I positioned myself at the top of the bleachers, right
in line with Ed's mic, center stage, so I could record it.
The band opened with Corduroy which was a perfect opening and from then
on everything was brilliant. Oh, Mudhoney opened and they were very good,
but come on, we all came for Pearl Jam. There was moshing of course and for
the first 5 songs, Ed voiced concern for safety and how apparently they had put
up the "Mariah Carey" barrier. There were 2 dudes who ran on stage right at
the start of Corduroy. The band played on.
Ed sang Wishlist to try and slow things down. At the end of the song, spotlight
just on Ed, he sang, "I wish I was a 4 foot wave, breaking on the North Shore."
Then he said "fuck it" and the band ripped in to Even Flow.
I teared up, or maybe it was just the tropical breeze in my eyes, during Black
and In Hiding. They were particularly beautiful. Over all, the whole concert
was anyone's Pearl Jam dream come true-just seeing them live is any fan's
dream come true, but this was in paradise, surrounded by palm trees, well
you get the picture.
Ed had a black tee shirt on with a Hawaiian shirt over it. For the first part
of the concert he had a yellow bumper sticker on it, but I could not read it.
Does anyone know what it said?
As far as my recording, I complied with the rules and had a little hand held
microphone included, walkman type. Unfortunately, some crack smoking
idiots were in front of me committing the ultimate sin, FUCKING TALKING,
during the concert. I was standing and refused to let them ruin one second
of the show but the recorder picked them up. I am sure they are not reading
this, but here is my message to you, Stay home and smoke your crack and
talk. Ok bye on that. Anyway, if anyone has a recording available of that
night, email me and I will be eternally grateful.
Jane (NaniNeko@aol.com):

I live in Hawaii and didn't have far to travel for the show.
It was my first opportunity to see Pearl Jam live, although I've enjoyed their music since the band's inception. What a wonderful night of art in the form of music by some very talented individuals. Basically, I loved the performance; their artistic merit is proven so clearly when their live show sounds as good, if not better sometimes, than their album, a great shortcoming for so many bands.
One thing about the evening concerned me, though, which is why I write. The band seemed disappointed (or annoyed) as Eddie spoke about looking forward to their first evening being perfect and yet it apparently wasn't for them. I just wanted to let the band know, the music was incredible to me, someone seeing Pearl Jam live for the first time. Words cannot describe how great you sounded!! It was obvious each member was having a good time and truly feeling the music as they played, which, to me, is why the band functioned so well together on stage. Thank you to the band for sharing your love of the art of music and creating a damn fine time for others!
