March 20, 1998, Entertainment Centre, Perth, Australia
Warwick Horsley (wazzahozza@hotmail.com) This concert lasted 2:15 hours, and consisted of 27 songs. The longest set and concert I have ever heard of!! A friend said to me yesterday, "Why are you going to both concerts, won't they be the same, or pretty similar??" I replied "Pearl Jam simply never play the same show twice, and chances are that the set list will be very different." Okay....from the 27 songs played tonight, 15 of them weren't played last night. Now how much more varied can a band as big as Pearl Jam get!! This time I chose to be in the seats, rather than in the mosh pit. I could this time get the set list, and take down anything of note. Shudder To Think played, and I liked them better this time. Eddie came out to sing Pebbles with them again. He did this last night as well. Then Pearl Jam came out!!! I was going mental again!! I saw Eddie grab his guitar, and straight away thought Long Road. Jeff also had his normal bass, rather than his sit down bass, which he uses for Sometimes. Long Road was first. They then kicked into Brain of J., an extremely hyper active version, that made me stoked, considering they didn't play it last night. Last Exit was next, followed by Animal. Eddie then spoke to the crowd, and asked us how we were - fine, just fine thanks Ed!! He then said "ahhh, we haven't played this next tune on tour yet, but it's a great song, and it's called Pilate." I couldn't believe it. I had not expected this at all!! The part "Stunned by my own reflection, looking back see's me too clearly, and I swore I'd never go there again, not unlike a friend that politely drags you down......" was truly amazing. I got the full chills down my spine, and through my body. Lukin followed, then Corduroy, where Eddie and Jeff did the 'lean' thing, against each other. It looked just great. In my tree was next, which was great to hear, especially Jack's drumming. It had some outro song attached to it, I couldn't make out most of it, but it went something like..."I don't care......who did something...Say What....." I dunno. Then towards the end of that, Mike and Eddie were going guitar riff for riff!! Eddie would do one, then mike, then Ed, the Mike etc....until Mike did this killer solo, and Ed just goes "Ohhhh you win, he's good" Wishlist was next, with the words being changed to "I wish I was a different being at home behind the sun" Do the Evolution thundered in, and totally rocked!! Jeremy was next and the crowd went wild. It really was a great version of a truly fantastic song. This also wasn't played last night, and many people were spewin!! Hail Hail went well next, followed by Daughter, which had the Pebbles tag "Poor little girl screaming traffic in her hair..." I think that is what he sang!! Eddie then said, the next two songs are like kinda story songs. Off He Goes was played, the he said "The next song is the longest song title we have, it's called Elderly Woman behind the Counter in a Small Town" Both songs really mellowed everyone out, with cigarette lighters coming up all over the place. Some guy, rather like myself the night before, had a sign down front that said - Hunger Strike. Eddie then says, "umm...the band doesn't know this song, but I'm gonna sing it anyway." And proceeded to sing Hunger Strike without any guitars or drums. It was sooooo damn cool. Not for you came, then Faithfull. Both fantastic. Alive was next with most of the lights on, and everyone standing, singing the words. I also managed to see some roadie type guy with a video camera at the back of the stage filming the whole place!! Cool I thought, this may get on the Pearl Jam home video I have been hearing about!! Eddie and Mike this time did a lean thing as Eddie skulled his beer. The boys walked off, and it was encore time!! First for the encore was Given to Fly, then Go, the State ofLove and Trust, a personal favourite of mine, and an excellent version!! Then, Stone and Jeff swapped places, and Eddie grabbed something small - Smile I thought. It was, and an excellent song indeed. Even Flow was punched out next. Eddie ran to the back of the stage and made shadows onto the back wall. It was sooo funny!! They said thank you and walked off again, and I was sooo hoping for a second encore!! Eddie came out by himself, and said a few more words to the crowd, and proceeded to play Patriot. A song that I had only ever heard once before. He did it solo, and it was absolutely sensational!! So mellow and beautifull. Then the boys rejoined Ed, as they played Better Man. The crowd went nuts!! It was great. I really thought that they would be walking off by now, but no, still more - but was I complaining - not a chance!! Yellow Ledbetter came out, and I don't care what anybody says about that song, it is one of the finest guitar creations ever. Mike was amazing. He and Eddie took the song to heights I never new it had. It was by well and far the best way to end the last concert of the Australian tour. What a night, so many surprises, and so many stories to be told. As Yellow Ledbetter faded out, I knew that I would be seeing Pearl Jam sometime again, cause I now know that I live to see Pearl Jam play live.
