Who encore: Ed and C Average join the Who for Let's See Action

(ActungB@aol.com):
First off, you've got Pete Townshend who has written songs for and about youth all his career, then you've got Ed Vedder, one of the youths he best inspired, and on November 12th/13th the two were transpiring to raise money for the last free orphanage in America. Thus, Youth Still Rules.

Unfortunately, at $300 a ticket, there weren't many kids but me on hand. And a lot of the older folks didn't really seem to be into Ed and C Average. Nonetheless, Ed and C Average played accordingly. A nice, safe, opening set. It was obvious that they understood their opening role and Vedder wasn't out to steal the show. They played both sides of last year's fan club single, a couple of the punk covers that make up the C Average repetoire, and two break-neck versions of "I am a patriot"(J. Brown) and "Driven to Tears" (The Police). Ed messed up the former a little and told the crowd that they'd best not worry cause a "real" guitarist would be on soon. And, he was right.

As for the way they looked, fellow Chicagoan Ed Vedder, had a #34 on his guitar. A sentimental shout out to all us Bear's fans mourning the loss of Walter Payton this month. And the C average bass player actually had on a work suit reminscent of the type of thing Townshend wore in the early 70's. The bass drum had the message "Don't Mess with Texas" on it. To which Ed explained that C Average were recently takin' in by Texas's finest for smokin' the pot on the highway. Ed was real funny in that I'm-clearly-not-the-person-these-people-came-to-see-but- that's-ok-cause-I'm-here-for-the-same-reason-they-are-so- we're-all-cool-right? kind of way. And also, he looked really thin (like new Chris Cornell thin) and his blonde hair made him look like a punk rock version of David Cassidy.

Then The Who showed up and rocked the place stupid for two and a half hours straight. At the end of which, Ed returned, looking uncharacteristically humbled, and shared vocals on "Let's See Action." You could tell there was some mutual respect between he and Daltrey cause they kept looking at each other thoughout it. Smiling and whatnot. See, if only Daltrey could steal some fashion tips Ed-so that then the kids would really be alright.
