Nelson Bae (nelrock@webtv.net):
Set: Last Kiss, Watch Outside, Driven To Tears, Running Out Of Time, Diamonds In The Rough, Love/Building On Fire, I Am A Patriot. The blond-locked Eddie Vedder took the stage and did a gorgeous solo version of "Last Kiss" to start out the set. He then introduces Brad and Jon from C-Average as guys he pulled out of the audience at the Tibetan Freedom Concert. In any event, this trio decided they were going to blister the L.A. crowd and ripped into the Police's "Driven To Tears." The melody was completely re-worked from the original into a fast-paced piece that had the crowd wondering if it actually was the Police song. The two Dead Moon songs came next back-to-back without a break. The trio could not have been tighter as they ripped into these songs and had the crowd absolutely spinning. Imagine the tone of "Lukin," but extended for about six minutes and punctuated with Pete Townsend windmill swings and song-ending leaps. It was punk heaven. Eddie then decided to share some of his word association with the audience as he gave different interpretations of what L.A. meant. For example, "Late Always," "Limited Access," "Lapdance Asshole," "Lame Addiction," etc., were thrown out in a seemingly neverending list of "bag on L.A."-isms. Whatever.

Back to the music, the band did an exceptionally well-done cover of the Talking Heads with Eddie perfectly handling the high notes. To close it out, "Patriot" was a rousing farewell. The set was much too short, but was ridiculously satisfying nonetheless.

Perry Farrell was spectacular in his dj set. The Chilis were energetic and entertaining. It was a great night of music had by all.

Paying for the Peppers and being surprised to learn Ed would also play was a great treat. The highlight would have to be Ed coming out to sing "Against the 70's" w/ Watt and Co. As far as his set, I think it would be safe to say it was the same as the Tibet show minus Better Man. Although the crowd was probably not too familiar w/ the material, there seemed to be a really good vibe going (through the whole night as well). There was even an "Eddie" chant after the set. I myself was only familiar w/ three or four songs. The set reminded me, in a way of seeing an unknown cover band. Of course it was Vedder, but it had a real straight forward, all systems go feel to it. You could definitely see their roots come through. Just loud uninhibited music. After he introduced C Average, the drummer said something and Ed told him to speak only when he gave him permission...classic sarcasm. The cover of "Watch Outside" by the Mono Men was really on key, plus I knew the song. Another highlight was Anthony singing the line, "just to see the look on their face" from Dirty Frank, during a jam at the end of the Peppers set. I only wish I was in Encinitas the following night for the secret shows w/ extended sets...but anyways, all around great night w/ great perfomances...well worth $35. $5 service charge? I see your point PJ, and oh yeah, what's up with that blonde wig???
