July 28, 1999, The Supper Club, New York, New York
Josh Butler (joshb@herzog.com): The Supper Club: After asking Synergy late yesterday where the "surprise" show would be here in NYC, and getting no answers I decided to start hunting. With a friend we began to call every venue we knew here in the city (over 1000). After intervention from a friend in Pittsburgh, I was in a cab headed towards The Supper Club (47th b/t Broadway and 8th). With no tickets, I knew this one would be tough. A true PJ veteran is never scared, just a little nervous. 23 shows from Ten to Yield. When I arrived in Times Square, PJ fans were everywhere hanging around outside the venue. The Who fans were inside. Fans waiting for a sighting of Ed were hanging out across the street from the show. I called my buddy who was on his way to the show who freaked out on the phone and told me he got 2 V.I.P. passes. (I cannot tell you how or else he would be unemployed) and inside we went... What a sick, sick, sick show. Ed and Pete. Ed hung out at his table for Pete's first 5 songs, and then joined him to the end. Drinks were on the HOUSE and I was HOUSED. The set lasted 90 min and was unreal. Pete played so hard and seemed amazed at Ed's skills on the guitar as well as the voice that fuels the greatest band in the world. The show got a kick in the ass when Anthony Kiedis (RHCP) walked in the club with his girlfriend. I managed to sneak in a camera so I will scan photos and send them in. For a true PJ fan this was a treat. No way 700 people were in that show. I would say 500 at most. The balcony was filled, and everyone else sat at tables or stood...very strange and energetic crowd. More Who fans than PJ although by the end of the night Ed had the crowd mesmerized. The place had the feel of a restaurant, very small. nice feel inside, and Ed played his heart out. Two highlights: Pete playing backup to Ed on Better Man. Magic Bus, and finally then unbelievable The One. Truly a magical night. my only wish is that all the PJ fans outside could replace all the people in suits inside. Long live rock, long live the jam. |
