October 5, 2000, Air Canada Centre; Toronto, Canada
Nathan Del Vecchio (nddelvec@julian.uwo.ca): WOW...WOW...WOW...I didn't think anything could top Toronto 98...but this show was amazing. The band was on absolute fire...they nailed everything and they were all in a great mood...running around and laughing a lot...Ed was very funny tonight. The band was very energetic and the crowd was loud. A very special thanks to PJ and the Ten Club for the great seats ... 5th row in front of Stone...awesome!!! Where to begin. I arrived with my friend Barrie in time to catch the last 30 min of Supergrass. They were excellent. After they left the stage we went to grab a couple of beers and then we headed to the merchandise. Well, on the way Barrie says "holy shi#, did you see that...there is Geddy Lee" and I turned around and there he was wearing a hat and talking to security. Very cool. We returned to our seats and Baba O'Riley started playing..then the lights went out and the boys hit the stage. The crowd went nuts and Eddie acknowledged with a wave. They opened with a perfect Sometimes and you could tell from the first note that they were on tonight. They ripped through Breakerfall and Corduroy (Matt was on absolute fire). At one point Ed said "the last time we played here it was the same number of people but spread out...is this place named after beer as well" At this point Jeff called him over and he came back and said "I guess it is named after an airplane...they serve beer on airplanes don't they?...we have taken off tonight" Grievance was awesome and Mike was jumping all over the place...kinda like when they played on David Letterman. Ed introduced Insignificance as "a song about being small" and Daughter really got the crowd going...complete with a cool tag...loved it! Ed opened up Betterman with a cool little guitar intro and they ripped through this one. Ed broke a string but he just kept on jammin through it. Other highlights of the night included Ed talking about Matt's other band, saying "he has 2 albums with another band called Wellwater Conspiracy ... and they are a lot better then the crap we are playing tonight." The whole band was laughing at him. Mankind was a great surprise. The next song was my favorite PJ tune "Immortality" I know they played it in 98 at Molson Park but I couldn't remember it..so this time I just took it all in. To close out the set they played killer versions of Even Flow (great solo by Mike) and Black...complete with the 'We belong together' part. RVW was awesome, as they all just jammed for at least a few minutes in the middle of the song...Matt was awesome. When they came back for the 1st encore Eddie said "we are going to take a request from the crowd to start" and someone held up a very cool Sleight of Hand sign, so they played it and it is incredible live. Crazy Mary was next and the crowd went crazy...Ed finished the song by sharing some of his wine with a few people in the front row. Once was great and then came DTE...wow...Ed went crazy and near the end of the song he started waving around his arms and it kinda looked like he was shadow boxing...anyway...he hit his mic and took it out..very funny. After DTE I saw him grab his e-bow and I knew Wishlist was next. Before Wishlist he asked us if we knew of Stephen Hawking, saying that "he is a great physicist way ahead of his time.....and the latest news that came out today is that he predicted the human race has about 1000 years left on the planet...so for the next 1000 years do we go f###### crazy...(crowd went nuts) or do we watch who we vote for...those are just a few thoughts and these are a few wishes" I remember in 98 Ed was talking about how the Dooms Day Clock had hit 5 minutes to 12 on the day of the show...and then tonight with the 1000 year bit....something about PJ playing TO. The mirror ball came down and the entire stadium looked so awesome. During Wishlist Ed changed the words to "I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as Geddy Lee." and at the end he was singing the part "I wish I wish I wish I wish" and he said something about 1000 years again. I couldn't make it out. Ed announced the next song as "this is a B-side" and they ripped through Leatherman. All the lights in the arena came on and Ed thanked us and explained something about a tribute album coming out for this band...they played Baba O'Riley...Jeff really came alive for this one and the entire crowd clapped in rhythm with Ed who was playing the tambourine...and the clapping got faster and faster and faster until the song ended...awesome. After a few minutes they appeared and we were hoping for maybe RITFW..instead the band played Indifference...what a great finishing song...complete with purple lights..it was the perfect ending to a perfect night. Thank you so much PJ for the memories and thanks to everyone that helps put on such a great show and thanks again to the Ten Club...to my fellow PJ fans, this is definitely a bootleg you will want to listen too!
See ya in Detroit
