October 7, 2000, The Palace; Detroit, MI
Dave (photag2@aol.com): I've been waiting for this day since April when I first ordered tickets for the Palace show. We got to The Palace around 5:00pm and walked up to the box office to get the tickets from the 10c. The lady at the box office looked at the tickets as she handed them to us and said, "These are good seats, enjoy the show!". I noticed the tickets were section B row 3, so I thought we would be seated directly behind the first several rows up front. Well, after unsuccessfully trying to go upstairs to scout for one of the 2000 tour jerseys, we decided to back to the car to finish our refreshments. It seems the Palace won't let people upstairs without tearing their tickets first. Once they tear your ticket you can't leave the arena and come back in (their security people said it's their policy). I went back to the car a bit bummed with no jersey. I thought at least I'll get to see a good show even though I probably won't get a jersey. From what the T-shirt salesman told us, the last time PJ came to the Palace (1998) all the jersey's sold out early. Just as Supergrass was finishing up we made our way into the arena and to our seats. We were told to go up the stairs, enter the arena and go all the way down which we did. An usher asked for our tickets and as we showed them to him, he stepped back and shouted, "All the way down to the front and make a left." I was thinking to myself as I looked up at the stage that these were going to be GREAT seats. Sure enough, every usher along the way checked our tickets and told us where to go up front. We finally go to our seats in the middle of the 3rd row from the stage. It turns out the main floor must have been divided in half with section A on one side and section B on the other. I sat in the seats for about 10 minutes thinking to myself, "Oh my God my favorite band in the world is going to be jamming right of me." It was quite the awesome feeling! Jam they did for about 2 hours. They started with Go and went into Corduroy. That reminded me of when Vitalogy first came out and we saw Pearl Jam play in Toledo in 1996. They did Corduroy and it sounded fresh and raw hearing it live for the first time. They soon did my favorite tune from Binaural, Insignificance. Because it is a new tune they had a lot of enthusiasm playing it and it too had a fresh and raw live feeling to it. During part of Animal Eddie was looking over at me. I was really jamming to it (probably making a fool of myself) as it is one of my favorite Pearl Jam tunes. I was surprised when they did In My Tree. There was no mistaking what it was when Matt kicked up the drums. I think Jack Irons originally did the phenomenal drumming on this tune. Eddie muffed some of the lyrics but the band still jammed. The crowd seemed up for the entire show but really came alive when they did Even Flow, Jeremy, Given to Fly and Rearview Mirror. A surprise was when they did Parting Ways from Binaural near the end. The band seemed really into it and a lot of people in the audience were singing the words along with Eddie. After the show ended we decided to go around to some of the T-shirt stands to look for a jersey. The second stand we came to upstairs had some soccer jerseys left. By purchasing one it made my night complete to have a keepsake of this grand event. All in all it was great concert and Pearl Jam was "on." Thanks to the 10c for the opportunity to buy the tickets. I keep telling people to pinch me and tell me it was for real.
