Sound file: Marty BaumgardnerMatt Jagel (REEBOK74@aol.com): The two shows I have seen from this years tour have been the two opposite extremes. Nashville was around 110 degrees, while last night in East Troy was a very chilly 30!! All I knew was that when the band cam out things would warm up. Supergrass was much more enjoyable than I expected, and got me much more pumped for the boys to come out!!! I was dressed in 2 layers of pants, 2 layers of socks, 3 layers of shirts, a coat, hat, and gloves...yet I was still extremely cold!!! All discomforts were forgotten, however, when Baba O'Riley blasted over the loud-speakers. Opening with Of the Girl was something I was hoping for, and it did not disappoint. The band really turned up the heat with Hail Hail, which got all five of them moving. I could see very well from my seats in section 203, but Mike's sound was very distant for the first few songs. Ed addressed the crowd early, calling tonight the "Ice Bowl!" Things kept rockin with Breakerfall, and a raucous Whipping!!! It was the first time I had seen them perform that song, and the energy was tremendous. Corduroy came next, and Ed started off with the wrong lyrics. Mike's solo was sweet, as usual. It's amazing he was able to play so well being bundled up so much. He had a scarf that did not leave his face the whole night. Animal kept the rockin tunes coming, which was very welcome. We all had to keep moving to thaw out our feet!! Elderly Woman surprised being so early in the set, which was followed by Dissident. This song is so great to hear live. It is a far underrated song, and Mike's smooth lead notes are just so pure to the ears. A double dose of Yield follows, with Given to Fly and Faithful keeping the rock tunes at the front of the bands repertoire. Even Flow came next, which allowed Mike to solo like crazy. Stone jumped up and down the whole solo to keep warm, while Jeff and Matt grooved away. An extended Untitled led us into MFC, which had EVERYBODY bouncing up and down. This led directly into Light Years, which was wonderful to hear. It's one of my fav's from the new album, and was great tonight. Ed kept things calm with Off He Goes, and Insignificance followed. It is a mind-blowing song live, and the band really plays it up for the crowd. A trilogy from Ten closed out the set, with Black leading things off. The solo was spectacular, with Ed just chillin back by Matt, watching Mike do his thing. Jeremy came next. Although I never get too excited to hear this one, it was a very intense version. Ed came out in front of the monitor speakers and straddled the gap in between the stage and the barricade. As the song ended, and fell off the monitor speaker to the stage floor. Porch ended the set, and the jam in the middle was very extended. Ed threw in some of "It's Okay" into the mix. Then they were off. Coming back to give a speech about Ralph Nader and hanging a sign on his monitor, Ed let his opinions be known about the equality of the presidential race. Whishlist started things off with Mirrorball time, and State of Love & Trust followed to shake things up a bit. Go kept things rockin. This song is always so intense for me to hear live. Betterman came next, with a small extended ending, although I do not beleive it was "Save it for Later." Daughter, along with great tag/jam from the band was definitely a highlight during the encore. The band almost seemed to be in a trance. Stone and Jeff switch, and we know it's time for Smile. Ed makes a comment about someone who wrote some lyrics in one of his books, and he gets "about 2/3 of a penny" for each copy of No Code sold. "so that comes to (laughing) well ... No Code ... like $20? (laughs)... no $200?...$2,000?" [mp3, right click, save as] Some lucky fan got the harmonica after it was over. Rearviewmirror closed the show, and what a spectacular version this was. The jam in the middle was very extended, with Mike playing to the audience on his side, and everybody else jamming in the middle. Ed gave another quick little speech after it was all over, and then ran off to get warm!!! Over all it was a very good show, although not a spectacular one. All things considering, the band has to be commended for playing so well in such cold weather. They made the night one to remember. Matt Jagel
