The best way to describe the show was cold and good. PJ played a whole range of music from all their albums including some stuff I've never heard before...I suspect they were new songs or improvisations, but they were very good. One those songs was very soft and had Ed was singing about "not having to run away." Their set was very energy packed, which was good since it got the crowd energized in such cold temps (you could see everyone's breath when they played).

A couple favorites of the show for me were Smile, which had Stone on bass and Jeff on Guitar....it was pretty sweet. Ed also told a story about smile. He said a friend helped him co-write it and that his friend got like 2/3 of a penny every time No Code is sold. And then he jokingly added, "It was no code so my friend made like $20." I also liked Black, because it seemed especially emotional to Ed and Mike put on a sweet solo. During the Second Set Ed put a "Let Ralph Debate" sign up and said that a vote for Ralph would leave you feeling warm and happy. Finally they closed with Rearview mirror which I thought was awesome. They had some strobe lights going and it was super heavy...which I like.

Hopefully next tour Minnesota will be in the plans, but well worth the drive. Thanks to 10c for the tix and PJ for putting on a very memorable show.

Pearl Jam did not let their fans down (as if they ever do) in the 30+ degree weather at Alpine Valley. After saying it was the coldest f*$#ing show they've ever played and that the bootleg should be played in a restaurant freezer to relive the experience, Ed warmed the crowd up with a nostalgic setlist. Even though they opened with Of The Girl, which was a nice surprise, they mainly stuck with material from the Ten, VS era. Even Flow, Jeremy, Daughter, Porch, Go, Animal, State of Love and Trust, Rearviewmirror, Dissident, and Black dominated the setlist. We got the history of Smile from Ed, even though he gave it to us in '98. The only disappointments were the almost lack of material from Binaural and Yield and Rearviewmirror as a closer. The crowd was chanting "Yellow Ledbetter" of course, but I was hoping more for NAIS, Last Kiss, Fuckin' Up, or (gasp) Indifference. Oh well, you can't hear every song you want without following the band around the country. I left very satisfied and praying for a 2001 tour!
