Joel Buchanan (Shades6850@aol.com): I got to the show a little later than expected, so I missed Supergrass, which is a shame, since I'm such a big fan. Pearl Jam would have to put on a great show to cheer me up. Plus, I was there to honor a promise to a late friend who went with me to the Dallas '98 show that we would go the next time they came to town. I had to hold up my end of the deal. Strangely enough, the PJ boys came out and opened the show with "Sometimes," the same song they opened Dallas '98 with. Whether that was planned or coincidence I don't know, but it was a nice twist. The "Binaural" material didn't seem to sit too well with the fans back in the section I was in. Most people sat down when a new song was played, but were immediately back up when one of the radio hits was played. There were some of the songs that people came to hear, such as "Given To Fly," "Even Flow," "Elderly Woman...," and a great version of "Rearviewmirror" complete with a big jam session in the middle to close out the first set. By this point, the entire crowd has decided that Mike McCready is one of the best guitarists out there. One amazing solo after another, WOW!!! When they came out for the first encore, Eddie proclaimed, "We're not stopping until that ferris wheel stops." He was referring to the Texas Star, the 300 foot tall symbol of the State Fair of Texas, going on right next door. I knew that "Wishlist" was in the show somewhere. It hadn't been played yet, but I could see the mirrorball in the light rig. It was a great version of what will be a classic song years from now. "U" and "Leaving Here" were a couple of surprises that not many people expected to hear. Both songs went down really well with the radio friendly crowd. "Porch" is maybe my favorite song off of "Ten," and when they pulled that off, I was amazed. The second encore was just a couple of songs, but it was a couple of good songs. "Smile" went down great, and when the lights came on for "Baba O'Riley", it was truly something special; a great band that will be a legend paying tribute to an already legendary band. Strangely enough, the seat next to myself and my friend I was with was empty all night, so I have a feeling that my late friend I made the promise to was there all along, and had a great time, as all of us there did. After the show, it was a process in going from Dallas back to the dorm here at UT-Arlington. My friend and I were in the car at 11pm, and it was 1am before we were able to get back here, and it should take only 30 minutes. Aside from missing Supergrass, it was another amazing night with Pearl Jam. From looking at the set lists from previous gigs on the tour, I feel that Dallas was a little shafted, but it was still a great set. And to the person with the sign, yes indeed, "Bush sux." I've had to put up with too many years of him already.
