October 18, 2000, United Spirit Arena; Lubbock, TX
David Dennis (ddennis@TTACS.TTU.EDU): Hey Y'all, I just returned from my first PJ fix of the tour, and amazingly they came to me this time instead of me road tripping (concert road tripping is quite common when you live in Lubbock). Thank all that is good and holy for the new Texas Tech United Spirit Arena. The acoustics in that place are awesome, but having Pearl Jam there made the place ROCK like it was meant to. This was my second PJ concert, and though the concert in Albuquerque in '98 kicked ass, the one in Lubbock had it beat. Opening with Corduroy really got the crowd into the music before PJ went into Breakerfall and other lesser known, but still totally rocking new songs. The crowd went nuts when they played Animal and again with Do the Evolution. When PJ came out for the first encore, someone threw a cowboy hat that had the Texas Tech Double T on it onstage beside Mike. He put it on while they played Hail, Hail, and got a rise out of the crowd. Another cowboy hat was thrown (this wouldn't happen anywhere else but Texas), and Stone ended up wearing it for the rest of the concert. The high point of the first encore was when Ed began playing a Buddy Holly song (not sure which) in honor of Lubbock being Holly's hometown, and the crowd went absolutely crazy. Also for you guitar people, I think that when they did Crazy Mary, Mike played the solo off of Stairway to Heaven. Maybe someone can confirm that. For the second encore PJ did a song which Ed introduced as being a song we poor college students would identify with---Fuckin' Up. Then, as I was beginning to believe that they weren't going to do anymore songs, Mike began the very familiar opening riff from Yellow Ledbetter. EVERYONE in the audience was on their feet and singing. But then Ed surprised us all and asked a girl from the front row (her name was Jamie, I think) to come up and dance with him. This totally stole the entire show! They danced a two-step dance and she was really freaking out, so Ed had her sit with him on the monitor speakers just in time to hear Mike bust out one of the best solos I've heard for Yellow Ledbetter. Ed took a polaroid of them together and gave her his bottle of wine. I think she was crying...it was really touching. PJ's first concert in Lubbock just got better and better! It was my best investment in a while. I hope to all that is good and holy that they release this show on CD. So keep jamming, and I'll see y'all in Albuquerque! David Dennis
