October 21, 2000, Desert Sky Pavilion; Phoenix, AZ
(kinny@uswest.net): Tonight I opted to miss my 20-year Lane Tech High School reunion in Chicago for a Pearl Jam show that I knew would be better. Although it was a cold and rainy night in Phoenix, we were warm and dry under the pavilion in our Fan Club seats. Thank you Ten Club for the wonderful service and unbelievably close seats. If you are reading this and are not a Ten Club member yet then...what the hell are you waiting for?!! Sign up now! Supergrass was such a great choice as an opening band. Gaz and the guys rocked the house! We hoped they would play our favorite desert southwest perfect tune, "Sun Hits the Sky," and they did. It was the best to see Supergrass live. I respect Pearl Jam even more for choosing them as the opening act. Go buy my favorite Supergrass cd, In It for the Money! They are so good and I hope they return again to tour the US soon. After my blood was pumped from Supergrass, there was time for a quick bathroom break and then PJ took the stage. A mystical "Long Road" opened with Stone sporting a Western cowboy hat and plaid pants. Yee haw! (Stone, despite your fashion sense you're still a cutie under that ten gallon hat and you make thee best guitar faces). The show unfolded with one killer tune after another. Highlights for me were SOLAT, Even Flow, Crazy Mary and I got Shit. To my delight they closed with Baba and I couldn't believe my eyes when Ed walked over to hand me his tambourine at the end. He was too far away to hand it directly to me so he threw it as close as he could. Another guy grabbed it and total chaos ensued. Ed watched as my boyfriend tackled two big guys to get the tambourine back for me. I squeezed it tight after that and played it during YL. Ed gave us a thumbs up when he saw that we had gotten it back. During the show Ed mentioned that the band would be celebrating ten years together. He said that ten years ago that evening they were in a basement together practicing and drinking Reinlander beer. When I think about that I feel so old realizing that it's been twenty years since I was in high school (class of '80!) and that it's been ten years since I first got goosebumps when I first heard Ed's voice on Hunger Strike in early '92. Ten years later and they are still by far the best band around today. I will treasure this tambourine and my memories of tonight for ten, twenty, fifty years to come. It wasn't my first show and it won't be my last. I have traveled the world to see this band. There's not enough room here to say enough about their talents and how they've inspired me. Oh yeah, Vote Nader and have a great time tomorrow night in Vegas!
