Eight years I've waited for this gig. Eight years since Pearl Jam played Glasgow's Cathouse on the Ten tour. Last night's show was fantastic and the band were very upbeat. Eddie was chatting away to the crowd and having a laugh. I could not tell you the set list because it all flew by so fast. I do remember Even Flow, Elderly Woman and State of Love and Trust. Great! Matt Cameron got a great reception from the crowd when he was introduced.
Worth the wait. Just don't leave it so long again.

From the minute the lights went out and the guys appeared on stage, the pace never stopped. Form the soft intro of Sometimes to the final encore of Yellow Ledbetter, we couldn't stop. Eight years had passed since Pearl Jam had last been in Glasgow and you could tell they wanted to make this a special performance. It was an appearance I'll not forget, from Eddie's singing to Mike's mad antics to Jeff without a hat it was well worth the wait.
Blasting out hits old and new like Breakerfall, Grievance and Nothing as it Seems to Even Flow and Animal and then to my highlight of the evening, Ed standing alone playing Better Man. Superb!!!
After a break they then launched into Brain of J, Do The Evolution and Light Years after a few words from Eddie saying "After eight years we'd like to stay a little while longer, if that's alright by you."
Off they went again but the crowd wanted more and on came Ed with his ukelele to play Soon Forget preceded by a little story about their last visit to Glasgow. Finally came the end but it was Mike's turn to shine with a great playing of Yellow Ledbetter.
Thanks for the memories guys, hope you come back soon. You've certainly made my year and I hope we made yours. Always remember Mrs Mop.

To say that the Glasgow show was phenomenal is an understatement. First,
the Vandals were outstanding once again and I only wish they would announce
the name of their CD so I could buy it. Warren did an especially lewd naked
romp during the last song.
I have been fortunate enough to see Pearl Jam
five times, one of which was last week in San Sebastian, and I have to say
that the Glasgow show was on another level. I have never seen a Pearl Jam
show that was less than spectacular, but Saturday night at the SECC was
truly amazing. For me, the most memorable part of the evening was hearing
the opening chords to "Untitled." After over a year of listening to that
song on L2L, it was really something to see it live, as well as to see them
follow up with Mini Fast Car (MFC).
There were other highlights, like
"Dissident" and "Habit" which were as roaring as ever. "Present Tense" was
an unexpected treat, which Eddie indicated "that there was a message in
there for the crowd," and really rocked when the entire band joined in
following the Mike and Eddie part of the song. "Rearviewmirror" was another
standout, the highlight of which was the impromptu guitar riffs. During
"State of Love and Trust," Eddie grabbed the mic stand and slammed it on the
stage at the end of the song. I think that the band's favorite song of the
night was "Once." It was first time I had seen it live, and I have been
waiting for this, but the band seemed particularly excited about playing it.
As Eddie indicated later, he was really excited during the chorus of "Once"
because he kept picturing how Mike Scott would sing the chorus. I believe
that Mike Scott is a Scottish singer, but I am not sure.

To cap off the
evening, Eddie played "Soon Forget" on his ukelele. He also prefaced the
song with a story about Mrs. Mop, a lady he met the last time they were in
Glasgow. When Eddie admitted that they had only been to Glasgow once before,
he realized his mistake right away, hung his head, and waited for the booing
to begin. The crowd did not disappoint, and Eddie replied, "Fuck you. I
had to do my laundry." Then he launched into "Soon Forget" but had to
start over because the volume on the ukelele was not loud enough. The song
got a very warm reception and fit perfectly into the set, although very few
people in the audience seem to have heard it before.
"Last Kiss" followed
and Eddie asked the crowd to help him out at the end of the song, which they
willfully did. "Yellow Ledbetter" wrapped up the evening and Mike did an
exceptional guitar solo as the rest of the band and the arena watched in
admiration. Eddie took quite a few pictures of the stage before leaving and
gave an additional thanks to the crowd. Clearly the band was enjoying
playing to their Scottish fans. The fans were overjoyed, as they had waited
so long for Pearl Jam to return.
There was one blemish on the evening though and I feel I must mention it.
I was in the center of the mosh pit, center stage during the intermission.
There were 3 Scottish girls behind me, around 18 years of age, who had been
waiting to see Pearl Jam for seven years. They were quite small and I was
unable to warn them about the nature of the mosh pit they were about to
encounter. So of course, when Pearl Jam came on and the electricity filled
the air as the opening chords to Sometimes came over the speakers, the crowd
went wild. Almost immediately, a bunch of huge guys come charging to the
front and about crushed the smallest of the three girls. This girl was
behind me and holding onto my waist for dear life. I tried to stop this guy
from crushing her, but he just ignored me and kept moshing. I could hardly
move as it was. The girl eventually got out of there, but I am sorry I did
not do more to help her. I guess that I do not understand the music as well
as I thought, because if I did, I would've done more to help. Anyway, I
checked with the paramedics after the show and they hadn't treated anyone so
I assume that she was okay. I hope if she reads this, that she is okay. To
attest to the roughness of the night's mosh pit, Eddie, ever vigilant of the
crowd's safety, stopped during "Given to Fly" to ask if everyone in the
crowd was okay. They were and it was a great show. On a final note, I love
to mosh to Pearl Jam as much as anyone, but guys we have to be careful of
other people in the pit because one person's carelessness can ruin a show
for another person, as it probably did for this girl. Judging from Eddie's
comments, I think that the band would agree. Great show, see you in
Germany.
