June 6, 2000, Cardiff Arena; Cardiff, Wales
Sickman__@yahoo.com: I arrived in Cardiff 2 days before the concert keen to see a bit of the area and stayed at the only hostel that was near the centre of the city. On the day before the concert it was sold out with 20 something (aged) Pearl Jam fans, most of whom had been following the band all over UK. I gotta say Pearl Jam fans are the coolest friedliest people and the feeling in the air was that we were all brothers and sisters. We all went out for drinks and dinner and got to know each other pretty well. On the day of the concert we got to the venue just in time for sound check and afterwards Ed came out and shook our hands and signed things for a few people. The concert was mind blowing and the venue was pretty small. The Vandals were the funniest bastards and full of energy. They started with a punk version of the SUMMER LOVIN song from GREASE that set the pace for a rockin set. They let the guitarist sing the last song which he decided to do naked (fully). He jumped round like a madman, stretching his dick like an elastic band and going totally insane. I really didnt need to see that, but it was pretty funny. Nothing as it Seems headed the list for Pearl Jam and most people were pretty composed. Breakerfall was next and stared a 6 song onslaught of heavy songs. The crowd went absolutely nuts and "the human tide rolled in" relentlessly. That was it for the evening, there was an even flow for the remainder of the night though BLACK and ELDERLY WOMAN and slower songs the crowd surfing gratuitously continued. I was ultra-impressed with the setlist, they played all my favourite songs, and rarely heard live ones at that. LEATHERMAN, ONCE, INSIGNIFICANCE, PILATE, SMILE. The overall theme was of "heavyness" like the songs I just listed plus SPIN THE BLACK CIRCLE, EVOLUTION, GO, MFC (Which wasn't listed on the setlist I found at FIVE HORIZONS but I definitely remember hearing the most intense rocking totally over the top version I ever heard) The "heavyness" theme worked great for me cause I like those types of songs the best. It worked great for the crowd surfers too, who continually surfed overhead at a rate of up to 5 at a time. Ed sounded great, Mike again was going totally off. I think he has been re-birthed. He seems to have been having a great time playing lately. But the award for outstanding performance went to Mr Cameron last night. He played solidly all night and as well as his usual drum thing he does on the outro of IMMORTALITY, he decided to GO OFF!! on a tangent at the end of one of the heavy songs. Although my memory may be mistaken, I think it was MFC. The rest of the band even crowded round to watch (as they continued to play). For those precious few minutes, I saw without a doubt one of the most amazing displays of drumming I have ever had the privelidge to see. I can't wait for this bootleg. (My MINIDISC had "run out" by then) The people I spoke to after the show all agreed that the set list was one of the most incredible ever, but the surfers detracted a bit from the experience. It was frustrating at times, I was starting to think Welsh people had never seen a rock concert. They were certainly starved for a good one anyway. Pearl Jam provided. Cheers to the boys for playing Cardiff and for an amazing show. I have to say, the security at the venue, treated us great. They supplied water, I saw them take photographs for the fans (shots of the fans standing at front row in the crowd) and they made sure they pulled the surfer wankers off our heads as quick as possible. I saw many a fan shake their hands after the show and thank them for doing such a great job. (me included) After that it was back to the hostel where we showered (not together as Eddie had suggested although he was probably figuratively speaking) and traded stories. 20 or so people sat up and drank at the hostel bar, chatting until 2:30 am. Today (day after) we are all dispersing. Thank you my brothers and sisters for such a fantastic experience. (and Pearl Jam) Enjoy the rest of your touring. Also thank you Cardiff. When he "rambled" before one of the songs, that one thing that stood out to him, was that all the people in Cardiff were so nice, and It's true. I live in London (for the moment but I'm from Australia) Cardiff was a fantastic break from the hustle and bustle, and over crowding of the capital. You people have a nice little town.
