June 12, 2000, Pinkpop; Landgraaf, Netherlands
Jasper Sonneveldt (jaspersonneveldt@hotmail.com): The expectations for the PJ show were really high. The last time PJ was on Pinkpop was in 1992. It still is one of the best, most rememberable performances ever. The photo of Eddie, diving from the camera above the crowd, is legendary. In the 8 years much has happened and changed. A big question was what PJ would do. Would they try to make another impression like 1992? But would that be possible, for anyone? The answer was probably no. The band did something completely different. Like this tour is a completely different tour as the 1992 tour. The crowd was really ready when PJ came on. They started with a smashing version of Corduroy. A fantastic song to begin with. Then it was just like a rollercoaster ride with Breakerfall, Animal and Hail Hail. Then Ed introduces the next two songs as songs about the weapon policy of the USA. Rival is played for the first time this tour followd by Jeremy. One the highlights the show was Light years. Ed is very serious for a moment and tells about the song. It was written for a good person who died much too early. Diana, he said. Even flow again was great. Mike playing terrific but not so involved as he is lately. Insignificance live is great as is Better Man. I thought Once was the only song they fucked up. Not because they made mistakes but it didn't have the right vibe, in my opinion. Fuckin up was a good answer. Ed jumpin and drinkin' wine as it was water. The encore was the beautiful Black and Leaving here. The crowd was really Live (the band) orientated. Old songs like Jeremy, Corduroy and Black were received with great enthusiasm. But songs like MFC, Lukin and Habit??? The crowd only wants to have a good time and wanted a "best of" setlist. PJ didn't do that. They didn't play Alive although some people started singing it. But they didn't need the song. I think that is one of the differences between PJ and other bands. Because what other band could not play their most popular song and still have a good show? Not many. Niels Arendonk (arendonk77@yahoo.com): Eddie was wearing a T-shirt from TIVOLI which is the concert room where Pearl Jam first played in the Netherlands en some of the video for ALIVE was recorded. Armed with his guitar and a bottle of wine, Eddie entered the stage. They played old and new songs in a random order. It was great; no it was even better than that, LIVE played after Pearl Jam and that was no fun anymore. I had seen them play before, but this was far out the best. In front of the stage is too hot and too sunny, but that didn't matter, because the concert was just great. Greetings Niels |
