June 12, 2000, Pinkpop; Landgraaf, Netherlands
Petra Gibcus (pgibcus@hotmail.com): After waiting for almost 4 years Pearl Jam was back in The Netherlands. The last time was in November 1996. Pearl Jam played at Pinkpop in 1992 and that was a real remarkable show. It has become one of the most legendary shows at Pinkpop ever. A lot of people compared this show with their performance of 1992. But it was hard to make a comparison because the two shows they played at Pinkpop were completely different. They were both fantastic. The first song Pearl Jam played was Corduroy. Man I love this song. It was a good start, especially the first sentence: “The waiting drove me mad”. It really drove me mad. I really looked forward to this show after waiting for almost 4 years and it was really great. I was very excited when they started playing. After Corduroy they played Breakerfall, Animal, Hail Hail and for the first time this tour they played Rival. Then they started playing Jeremy and the crowd became even more excited. Eddie was really great (and the other members of the band too). Nothing as it seems followed, the current single and I loved it. After that MFC and Habit were played. Light years followed and Eddie became serious, because sometimes in life you just can’t say goodbye to people and they just die. They dedicated this song to Diana, a good person who died too soon and they couldn’t say goodbye to. Light years was one of the greatest songs they played. I really love that song and I know what PJ means by this song, because it reminds me of my sister who died too early (at the age of 17). It really affected me. Lukin was a stranger. After Lukin they played again a few great songs: Even Flow, Insignificance, Better Man, Rearviewmirror and Once. In between he made a joke about Ed from live. Eddie told that Gomez was playing, Moby was playing later on and after Pearl Jam another band played with a singer who was called Ed. But Eddie said about himself that he gave better Ed. After saying this he laughed. They played Insignificance and Better Man really good. These two songs were really great live. Better Man really made my flesh creep. The last song of the official playlist was Fuckin’ up, an ode to Neil Young. As he announced this song Eddie was drinking wine, just like it was water. Eddie got a tambourine and jumped on the stage. After a while there was a hole in the tambourine and Eddie put his head through it. When the song was over he threw the tambourine into the public. Eddie took some pictures of the crowd and Pearl Jam left the stage. The crowd was still very excited and was screaming: We want more, we want more!!!!! Finally they came back and played Black and Leaving Here. Everybody sang along with Black. Eddie first had to take care of something personal. He asked someone at the tower where the tape of last night was because he needed it. He suggested that the tape was given to him through the public and that he would pick it up in front. He said he trusted us. But the tape was in the bus. It was a great show even better than that. The Dutch Television broadcasted the songs Insignificance, Better Man, Rearviewmirror, Once, Fuckin’ Up, Black and Leaving Here live. Later in the evening they broadcasted Even Flow. I taped it and it looked great on tv too. Pearl Jam was one of the highlights of Pinkpop and that was no surprise. Now I’m really looking forward to the 3rd of July when they play in Rotterdam (Ahoy). See you at Ahoy Rotterdam!!! |
