June 15, 2000; Spodek, Katowice, Poland
Wojtek Bonecki (voyteck@valhalla.com.pl): 15/6/2000 - Katowice, Poland That was night I had been waiting for long time! Dream made itself real! I showed up under Spodek something about 10 AM. I was the one of the first persons who did it. Then I started to feel the climate of that day, of that wonderful night. All of the next minutes and hours of waiting brought new waves of fans. I looked around the Spodek. I saw those big, red trucks which had arrived with amps, loudspeakers and guitars of Pearl Jam. It was nice view to see this equipment. Day went slow... I received word "hello" from guy who tuned and passed Mike guitars during the show. Maybe it wasn't special thing but it made me even more cheerful that day! But I was waiting there for somebody from the band. I was doing it until 3:40 PM and then I went out to the front of Spodek, to see how many people had come. There was about 3500 people. And then... somebody came from the back of venue and said that he had met Ed a few minutes ago. Yeah! Ed drove up to the fans on the skateboard! He signaled to be quiet and he said that he wouldn't give autographs (probably because of too many fans). Unfortunately I wasn't there. I was out of luck this time :( I asked my friend about time and then (it was 6:30 PM) guards from Fosa approached to the front doors. As soon as possible we moved there. The rest of the people moved there too so there was very tightly... was even hard to breathe! Guards were really boorish! but f*ck them! I arrived there to see the best band of the world! Yeah! I entered the Spodek without problems. I can't forgive myself that I didn't try to smuggle camera. I was inside. My throat was completely dry so I bought something to drink. I drunk it and then entered the place in the front of the stage. I was something about 5 meters from scene. Support came. They played quite nice, melodic rock. I like it! They finished. Red and blue sectors of Spodek was completely filled by audience. Pearl Jam crew started to prepare the stage for the Pearl Jam performance. I recognized some faces of the Pearl Jam crew from the Live On Two Legs cover! I still don't what hour that was, but Pearl Jam entered the stage! What a greeting! What a magnificent atmosphere! They started the show by beautiful Long Road. I was hypnotized. It was the first time I saw Pearl Jam live! And then one song of the latest album Binaural - Breakerfall. Do you remember those Ed's swing hand moves? Wow! The next song which they played was Corduroy. I always wanted to hear it live, so I was very excited! That was one of these songs which we (audience) sang it along with Eddie. Great feeling! Then some fast songs came: Animal and Brain Of J! Then Ed announced that they will play song called Nothing As It Seems. When I heard opening solo of that song, my body surrounded chills. It sounded so awesome! Jeff played it on his electric double bass. Given To Fly... My God! I love that song! God's Dice - next song from Binaural, played so briskly with this magnificent Mike's guitar riffs! Pearl Jam played some No Code song too. It was Present Tense in beautiful version. All this time Mike was very active, he ran around the stage. He is a showman! Sometimes his weird gestures were really funny :) Vitalogy times... We had pleasure to hear Not For You and Better Man. Unfortunately I overlooked second one... I went out to buy something to drink. Spodek was filled by heat that night! I returned while Matt was starting his awesome opening part of drums in Grievance. Then Pearl Jam played beautiful Thin Air. Audience was singing together with Ed. Jeff splendidly played his line after "Taking on, on, on, on, on, on". :) Even Flow. Crowd was really excited! Nothingman with awesome singing with gentle guitar riff. Insignificance and Rearviewmirror! Yeah! Pearl Jam rocks here! Before second chorus of Insignificance all of the lights went out. Silent. And after a few seconds, Pearl Jam exploded! What an incredible impression (they did something similar second night)! Time for encores! They started with Do The Evolution. Ed brought monkey mask. He put it on the stand, and he sang to it! :) A few minutes later he threw out it to audience! Afterwards Pearl Jam played powerful Vs song called Go. Yeeah! Rival was the next song. I dreamed to hear it live! Then real surprise! Footsteps! Ed played here on his harmonica (later he also threw it out). Magnificently thing! Some people (me as well) tried to sing along with Eddie... Wishlist! This was the next part of my perfect setlist. Those miraculous Mike solos and Ed's voice! Song was a little elongated so I thought that Pearl Jam would play one more verse here but finally they didn't it. Next Ed talked about "Magdas" and then PJ played us one of the most beautiful ballads - Elderly Woman... That was the next time when audience sang together with Ed. Magnificently! I cried! Last Kiss... Another beautiful song! Audience was clapping in the certain rhythm which Ed initiated. What an experience! Crowd and the band was totally intimated! :) When I heard Stone's opening riff of Alive I almost fainted out! Once again audience was singing along with Ed. That was the next time when my face covered tears... After this wonderful song, Ed brought tambourine. Pearl Jam started to play Rockin' In The Free World. I didn't expect they would play it this time! What a rockin' summary of the show. Eddie jumped onto left loudspeaker, looked around the crowd and then jumped onto right one and there he passed his tambourine to the lucky fan. Mike at the end of this Neil Young composition smashed his guitar and then threw its neck to the audience! Rockin' In The Free World was the last song that night. At the end of the show Ed spilled the rest of his wine on the crowd. Later he brought his camera and shot some photos of first rows. I am still under impression of this magnificent night. That was the first one of two most beautiful nights of my lifetime. Thanks for all Pearl Jam! |
