Ricky Hill (highview@halifax.com): What another GREAT SHOW!!! I had just seen them in Charlotte on Friday night and didn't think anything could top that show. Boy, was I WRONG! As, I was driving to Greensboro on 29 South, I was listening to Binaural, hoping they would play one of my favorite songs off of it, "Of The Girl." Much to my surprise, that is the song they opened up with!!! The live version was EVEN BETTER. After the first three songs, Eddie said, "Good evening,... it's great to be back in North Carolina.....(grins)...it's been about two days." And then added, " It's seems like years." When they finished doing "Evacuation," Eddie was rubbing his throat and turned around and looked at Matt, and told everyone "Matt wrote that song,...(grins)..I think he was trying to punish the singer,...come to think of it, I wrote the lyrics!.. (smiles)..Maybe I was trying to punish myself!" After that, they followed with, Nothing As It Seems, Jeremy, and Daughter.( It was great to hear "Daughter." That was the song that got me hooked on Pearl Jam to start with.) Later on, Eddie said, " This is one we don't do too often....(he reaches down and grabs his bottle of wine and holds it up for everyone to see)....a little COURAGE! Then they started playing "In My Tree" from " No Code". It was GREAT!!! During "Spin The Black Circle," Eddie grabs the mike stand and spins it, accidentally hitting his self in the mouth and busting his lip open. He walks over to the side of the stage as Matt looked up curiously at Eddie as if to say, "What happened?" Eddie looked at him and did a motion with his fist recreating the incident. After "Rearviewmirror," Eddie walks off the stage, waving at the crowd with a "bloody smile." They came back on stage to do "Light Years." (Another one of my favorite tracks from Binaural.) Followed by "Crazy Mary"(another song that they rarely play). It's a line in the song that goes" Take the bottle and pass it around," (Eddie, at the end of the song, takes his bottle of wine and pours some in a cup, and passes it to someone in the crowd!) Later, Eddie says to the crowd,"I've noticed this guy all night long holding a tape recorder (Eddie points him out to the crowd), which is perfectly fine, but in order to get a good recording, he has had to hold his arm up the entire time! We're fixing to play a couple of romantic songs, so why don't you give it to me, and I'll sit up here so you can put your arm around your girlfriend! ( Eddie reaches down and takes it from him.) Standing there looking at it, Eddie says jokingly,"He really doesn't think I'm going to give it back to him, does he? (Eddie grins) "Just kidding!" (Before he sits it down on the stage, he whispers something into the recorder and grins.) Then they played "State of Love and Trust" followed by "Last Kiss".(Everyone sang along on this one!) During "Breakerfall," Eddie breaks a string on his guitar, as he is trying to finish the song, the string keeps getting in his way, until finally, he yanks the string off. At the end of the song, he breaks all the strings off of his guitar. For the second encore, Eddie brings his ukelele out, and does "Soon Forget," followed by "Smile" from No Code. What a MEMORABLE NIGHT!!!!! Thanks, Pearl Jam, for another wonderful show. See you on the next tour!!!
Mark (dmkuyken@unity.ncsu.edu): The tension was in the air from the moment we arrived at our seats. This was the first time I would see Pearl Jam live. I had waited for this for a long time. Before the guys took the stage, there was this kid, apparently quadriplegic, who was wheeled out of the backstage area with his parents and security. He was seated onstage near the edge with his parents for the show. After Pearl Jam finished playing Daughter, they went into a song that I have never heard (apparently Ed was not too familiar with the lyrics because he stood onstage singing them off of his note paper). During the course of the song, Ed stood in between verses and looked directly back at the kid in the wheelchair for a minute. I am guessing the kid asked Ed backstage to play the song. Maybe. I don't know. Either way, I was extremely impressed with the band for taking time out to spend with this kid and it just goes to show the true love and care Pearl Jam has for their fans and those less fortunate. Corduroy also seemed very appropriate for this situation. One of my favorite moments in the show was during the first encore when Ed was talking to the crowd. He said something like, "There's a guy up here…he's got a recorder," he was talking like he wanted security to come and get the guy, and then he said, "but that's okay" and everyone went berserk! He took the guy's tape and with the mic down said a personal message into it and played with it right in front of him onstage. Another treat during the show was hearing "In My Tree." Ed introduced the song in that they "hadn't tried this one in a while." It was so beautiful. In studio it sounds quite mellow, but Ed was ripping it up onstage with his guitar. I had energy flowing all out of me during the song. The live version was truly amazing. It was special for me because In My Tree was always my favorite off of No Code. The song sounded so electric. Also, hearing Crazy Mary was also fun. I was full of energy the whole concert and loving every second of it. Pearl Jam has filled my life with joy concerning music. They inspire me constantly in poetry and art, that is of great value to an architecture student like myself. Their music has so much meaning to me and I believe that Pearl Jam is honestly the greatest band ever. That was the best night of my life with great seats, a truly unforgettable set list, and the most amazing girl I have ever met ;) Thank you Eddie, Mike, Stone, Jeff, and Matt. I love you guys and I can't wait for the next single, album, show, or even the next update on Synergy. Good luck with the rest of the tour and may you continue to bless millions. |
