David Harris (daveharris@email.com):
Before I briefly describe how incredible the 1st and 2nd shows were, I must thank Nicole Vandenburg, who is with the band's crew, and Tom Muzquiz at Epic. The band was on fire. the first night opener, Oceans, was *epic*... Photographing both shows from the pit in front of the stage was a dream come true and was as memorable as any Pearl Jam-experience could be....the only thing left to say about how tight the band was, was that the second night had some very distinct moments (like McCready's sick solos during Black and
Yellow Ledbetter, and the I Got Shit absolutely rocked!)...also I heard something about the set list being written in part by some of the crew... PJ, you rock!

Mars Music Amphitheatre
August 9, 2000
1:30pm - Arrive at venue to pick up our Ten Club tickets. Greeted by a girl
named Linelle?, who is setting up numbers for all of us to
get in line.
2:30pm - We are allowed to go to the ticket window. Everyone is being
orderly and curt. I am convinced that the Pearl Jam fans are
the nicest people. I Love the Jamily!
3:15pm - Ticket window opens. The line is moving smoothly. People ahead of
me have grins on their faces. My turn to go up to the
window. I'm hoping for tickets somewhere in the first five rows. I get my
tickets. HOLY SHIT!, front row. I'm beaming. I have to look at
my tickets again to make sure I'm not imagining things. I'm not. My hands
are shaking, I'm super-psyched.
5:00pm - Arrive back at the venue. Go to our seats. I'm smiling so much. I'm
loving the Ten Club. I'm really loving it.
7:30pm - Show starts. Sonic Youth is pretty good. Lot's of distortion. I'm
getting a headache. I'm really excited. I still have a
headache.
Around 8:15pm - The lights go dark. I see a silhouette. It's Matt...then
Ed.. everyone else must've come out at the same time.. I'm in
shock. I'm trying to take a picture, but my eye can't find the eye-hole. I'm
jumping up and down. They start off with "Oceans."
We are standing right between Mike and Jeff. Mike keeps hopping up and down,
really playing it up to the crowd. He smiles at me a
couple of times. As far as I'm concerned, I'm the only one there. The music
is beautiful. I'm swaying my head. Mike smiles some
more.
I'm trying to catch a pick (Mike keeps throwing them), but I fail. He looks
at me, as if saying, "did you get one?".. I throw up my
hands and shake my head. He smiles and motions that he'll try again. He
does, a whole handful this time, and I get one. No wait, I
get two. I'm feeling really lucky.
They're playing amazingly. The guys look really happy, they're having fun.
Ed keeps making faces at the video camera down by
stage. He seems ok, and I'm happy for him. He goofs the lyrics to Even Flow
and kind of makes this face, half laughing, half not. I
don't remember if he says anything. He's having a good time.
Jeff seems kind of introverted tonight, not really looking at the crowd,
just playing his music. He approaches the stage a few times,
he looks really into it. He's wearing PJ socks!
They go into 'State of Love and Trust.' I don't really know the words, I'm
just mouthing words, any words, and I'm looking at Eddie. He
sees me messing up his song, singing nothing, and I shrug and stick out my
tongue. I'm embarrassed at this point, and he smirks at
me. I feel silly and happy at the same time. Then he spits on me. I look at
him, then around me, to see if anyone saw what he did,
and then back at him.. and he's smiling to himself. I don't take it
personal, he's spitting all over the place. It's still kind of gross
though. ;)
They play "Better Man," my favorite song. I'm screeching. I'm taking
pictures. I think that this version is the best version of
"Better Man" I have ever heard. They all look amazing. I swear, I love the
Ten Club. They finish up with "Rockin' In The Free World." I
can't believe its over. They played 28 songs, but it seems like they just
started a few minutes ago.
I'm left in awe. I just saw an amazing band, play amazing music. I can't
wait to see them again. I'm feeling empty now, but not so
empty because I'm left with incredible memories. Thanks to the Ten Club for
the unbelievable tickets and thanks to security for
letting us stand right up to the stage. The night was absolutely memorable.
