Like a fine wine, Pearl Jam seems to get better with age. My girl and I
have attended three PJ shows and we both agree that Tampa's concert was the
best they have ever played. The interaction between the fans and the band
was incredible; we both fed off of each other. I cannot believe how
energetic and electric the crowd was, and the guys certainly plugged into
that energy and delivered a set that was out of this world.
To me, the highlights of the night were awe-inspiring versions of Tremor
Christ (1st time played in 2000), Indifference, Soon Forget and Garden.
Garden was slowed down, giving me a completely new feel for the song. To
me, Garden is a blues song at its heart, at least that's the feeling this
rendition emitted. The guys also ripped through amazing versions of Porch,
DTE, RVM and Hail, Hail. Immortality was also excellent. I've never
really been a fan of this song, but hearing it live, I have a new respect
for it.
Did I forget to mention PJ came out for 3 encores? All 3 of them were
brilliant. I was really hoping to hear Soon Forget, and after the 1st
encore, Ed brought out the ukulele and played the song after he got the
crowd to settle down a little. I think the entire band was very delighted
with the crowd...they seemed so excited and appreciated...and so was the
crowd. After Soon Forget, the rest of the band came out and played a
beautiful Indifference. My girl and I thought the show was over after
that, but we decided to stick around. Lo and behold, the band comes out
for a third encore (amazing!) and plays the hell out of Rockin' in the Free
World with the crowd singing along (like they did for almost every song).
All in all, this was by far the best PJ show I have seen. Pearl Jam is the
BEST band in the galaxy! I would just like to thank the guys for playing
their hearts out for all of us fans lucky enough to see them live.
The Super BonBon@aol.com:
What a phenomenal show!! My buddies and I where at the bar a few hours before the show getting all pumped up. We were pondering what songs might be played and figured that they usually start off mellow. Not tonight!!!
They came out right and blasted into Corduroy, Grievance, Last Exit, Animal, and God's Dice. Ed had his hands out counting to 5 in Animal. Mike's solos during songs had his head tilted back, looking up at the ceiling, and his fingers blazing over the strings. Everyone on stage was jumping around and letting loose. A nice little pause during God's Dice where the stage went pitch black and silent for a few moments before jumping into another verse. It got so intense that Ed had to take off his button down collared shirt and but it in his back pocket...and Mike stripped down to a tank top!
During one of the courses for Tremor Christ, I thought Eddie mentioned that "The East Coast gets NO big, big waves." It made sense seeing how he complained that there were no waves in West Palm a few days ago, and it rained all afternoon before the show.
Jeremy was a complete surprise...the crowd went ecstatic during the first few chords when the realized they were about to play it. Ed put everything he had in the last long "Evacuation" scream. Screaming and leaning back while clutching the mic stand...he nearly toppled over!!
One of the longest versions of Daughter ever...and one of the best. After the last lines for Daughter, everyone waited to find out what the trailer would be....so did Ed! He finally sang Another Brick in the Wall, but only if the crowd saying. After giving us a start, he held the entire mic stand out for the crowd to sing!
RVM ended an awesome set. Ed looked like an acrobat with all his jumps during his last few strikes of the strings. Three spins right in a row! Then the band left the stage for about 3 or 4 minutes. And we thought that they might calm things down a little...thinking they might be tired after a nonstop rocking set. Wrong again!

Then come out to DTE and Hail, Hail! Ed flubs the lines to DTE singing the last verse second by mistake. When he got to the end of the song, and starting re-signing the last verse he ended it with..."2010, and I just sang it again!" These powerful renditions were followed by a super bluesy sounding Garden and the always incredible performance of Immortality...were Ed stood behind Mike to hold him up and lean against him.
Porch rounded out the first encore then the band left the stage again, and about a minute later Ed comes out. He starts photography the crowd, then turns the camera on himself! He hands out the self-portrait to a lucky fan. Then...pulls out a ukulele from behind him like a magician! He tells the crowd that it's weird of him to ask after the night we've all had, but that we had to get quit for him to play. "Your a big crowd, and this is a little instrument," Ed told us. And he "sssh"-ed us as he starting strumming out the chords. This was followed by the rest of the band coming back on the stage for a great Indifference...where in the middle of the song Ed puts his shirt back on in the style of Mr. Rogers! After the song's done, the band leaves again.
But something was weird. I told my friends not to leave. They said goodnight and thank you, but the house lights never came on during the last song. But they were done, right?
They come back out about 3 minutes later and everyone heard a great, extra long RITFW!!! Ed plays the tambourine and claps it over his head, and the whole venue is filled with Ed imitators! We all start clapping along, just like he was!! It was amazing to look around and watch!
An unbelievable show by an unbelievable band!!! Thank you Pearl Jam and everyone!!!
