I went to the Nashville show last night, and the one
major difference was the weather. It was so hot in
Tennessee compared to Indy, and I even think that it
affected the mood of Pearl Jam. Resulting in a better
performance than the great one in Nashville. With the
temp down to 65 degrees, Sonic Youth came out to play
a quick, yet another good set. It seemed that it took
PJ a little longer than usual to come out. But when
they came out, the 25,500 (soldout) people all got
situated, and prepared for an amazing show.
They started off with a little sample from
"Interstellar Overdrive" and went directly into
"Corduroy." A great song to lead off with. "Grievance"
followed, and was nice to hear live. I have always
wanted to hear it since the Letterman performance.
Stone was very animated tonite, jumping and dancing
and doing some really weird things. "Spin the Black
Circle" came and got the whole crowd rocking. "This
one is called 'Dissident,' is what Ed told us, and it
was definitely one of the better versions I have
heard. "Thank you, I don't know much about Indiana and
didn't know this...last night in Nashville felt like
hell...so Indiana feels like heaven, but heaven is
debatable." I think the guys really liked the
unusually chilly Indiana weather. It looked like Ed
told Stone and Jeff something, and looked like he told
them to mix it up. So I don't know if "Brain of J."
was on the setlist, but they played it anyway.
"Animal" came next and the crowd was doing the
1-2-3-4-5 against 1 on their hands. "Given to Fly" was
a solid performance, and everybody was singing along.
"This song is off our last album 'Binaural' and it's
called 'Nothing as it Seems', and that is Mike
McCready." Mike was definitely on fire, and I think he
is the MVP of this tour. A crowd favorite "Even Flow"
was next, and Mike's solo just kicked ass. A very big
surprise, and one I had never imagined PJ to start
playing, "Pilate" sounded great, especially the
"stunned by my own reflection..." part. "Lukin" was
great, but was the only "No Code" song played tonite.
It's OK, cause I saw plenty last night. "Light Years"
was absolutely amazing, the chorus is great live, and
Matt Cameron nailed this one.
I am not sure, but there
was some sort of Intro/Improv into "Better Man," I have
never heard it. But the "Save it for Later" tag was
amazing, the best I have ever heard. "Leatherman" is a
nice little song to hear live, it was followed by "Not
For You." One I have always wanted to hear live, Stone
is definitely in the drivers seat on this one. "Black"
was another fan favorite, and Mike just made it all
better with an extended solo, kind of like LO2L. An
instant PJ concert classic is "Insignificance," it is
just amazing to hear live. And Ed just hammering the
guitar, is awesome to see. "Go" came, and now I know
what its like to hear it at the end of the first set.
The jam at the end is awesome, its kind of like
Rearviewmirror's end. Mike played his solo behind his
head.
Ed came back out for the first encore. "Its much to
beautiful tonight to leave yet." "I was back there in
the back 40 (pointing to the lawn) watching Sonic
Youth." "My brother is here tonite, and I haven't seen
him since we got back from Europe, so its nice to get
to see him again, so I dedicate this song to him,
because life is short, sometimes too short." The cover
"Throw Your Arms Around Me" was soloed by Ed, and
another surprise I have never seen. "Do the Evolution"
was next, then "State of Love and Trust." Ed took a
drink of wine, and said "This is a song we've been
trying lately, but before we start it, I don't know if
you can see the moon (pointing above the lawn), its a
beautiful moon, so look at that and not us." "Crazy
Mary" was nice to hear live. "This next song is played
here in Indiana, cause we know there is a lot of
them." "Elderly Woman" got all of the crowd into it.
"Last Kiss" was sung by everyone in the crowd, and Ed
let us help him on the "oh's" at the end.
"Rearviewmirror" is next with Ed introducing it as
"another car song, but this one doesn't wreck." I
think that is a song that should make every PJ setlist
at every concert. The end of it is so amazing.
2nd encore, and Ed comes out and grabs two huge
request signs. One says "Believe you Me" and the other
"Free World." "Indifference" is played, and is great
to hear live. "Alright Indy, thanks, and until next
time, we'll see ya." "Rockin' in the Free World" comes
soaring through the speakers. They absolutely nailed
that one tonight. Mike goes crazy one more time for
the crowd. And it's over, the house lights are on, and
the band is gone.
More notes: Ed fucks up the words in the chorus of
"Elderly Woman," and realizes it and just starts
laughing. When trying to correct it, he almost did it
again. "I am the first mammal to PISS my pants" "Small
my table, sits just ONE" are noticeable lyric changes.
He held his voice in one song (Betterman?) for what
seemed like 40-50 seconds, and I don't think anyone
stayed with him on it. Matt played a drum solo at the
beginning of Not For You.
It's my last PJ show of the tour, which is
disappointing, but I know they'll be back. I really
think they like Indy (with the Yield tour show and now
this one). I believe this was the biggest crowd on the
U.S. Tour so far (25,500). I know we all love PJ, and
will always invite them back. Thanks again Ten Club,
Synergy, and of course, Pearl Jam.
