October 20, 2001, Bridge School Benefit; Shoreline Amphitheatre; Mountain View, California
Nelson Bae (sonicfusion@earthlink.net): It's nothing short of remarkable that a band that hasn't played together live in a year can sound so amazingly tight - Pearl Jam stole the show tonite (with apologies to a blistering solo of "All Along The Watchtower" by Dave Matthews and an amazing Neil Young instrumental of "Imagine" while the crowd sang the lyrics). "Long Road" led off the set with a groovy "Of The Girl" following. The performance became a crowd-sing-a-long with "Elderly Woman" ("A song we wrote on the other side of the hill over there" said E.V.) - "Daughter", "Better Man", "Crazy Mary" and "Indifference" (w/ Ben Harper) were also selections where the crowd felt compelled to sing the lyrics out loud. New song #1 ("Leave It All Behind"???) is interesting in that it & "Drifting" ("written on the way back from Neil's house - no one can leave Neil's house, not even an insurance salesman, without coming back a songwriter") are very country-influenced. Great guitar solo trade-offs between Stone & Mike. It seems that an impending new record in 2002 will be very acoustic/country-flavored. The melodies to these songs are gorgeous. Pearl Jam's songwriting is obviously evolving for the better..... "Give Me Some Truth" was a terrific pick to cover while "Last Kiss" was dedicated again to the same Bridge School student from '99. Her smiles & laughter symbolized what this concert was all about. The band left the stage with the crowd wanting more. It was a phenomenal concert overall (who would have thought Billy Idol would be so good) - and Pearl Jam sounded in mid-tour form. What a gifted band. I'm guessing that "Nothingman" and "Off He Goes" will make the second night's setlist.
