April 2, 2001, St. James Theatre; Auckland, New Zealand
Kristin Edwards (kristin.e@paradise.net.nz): Monday night was one of the most amazing evenings of my life. Being a kiwi through and through, you subconsiously know Split Enz and Crowded House songs. So I couldn't quite believe it when I heard that Neil would be playing with Eddie. My mother couldn't understand why I wanted to drive all the way up from Wellington (about a 10 hour drive) for "just a concert." But I knew I couldn't miss it. I've been waiting since Feb '98 to see Pearl Jam live again. That was an awesome night and so was Monday. The concert started at about 8:30pm to an almost full theatre. Neil came out and played a few songs then asked if there were any questions. To which some guy yelled out "Where's Eddie?" Neil responded by saying that he was fine and was out the back with Tim. He also said that Eddie would take on any man in New Zealand, which followed with a yell by a female fan, "what about any woman!" After playing a large amount of songs from his new album with scattered comments that Eddie was fine. And a few solos by Lisa Germano and Johnny Marr there was a short break with Neil promising that the second half would provide a few surprises. After introducing Tim and playing an amazing new song by the brothers with Tim playing the grand piano, Neil introduced Eddie. Eddie strolls in with a glass of red wine in one hand and a note book in the other. Neil said that apparently according to the rumours he first met Eddie when he saved his life at Karekare beach, a popular story amongst fans down here. Eddie asked where the guy was that wanted to fight him and then also where was the woman. Then played Around the Bend, Not for You and Parting Ways with Neil joining in occasionally. It was great to hear Not for You. It had the crowd fired up. After the songs Eddie started to walk off but was stopped by Neil asking him how old he was when he first heard a Split Enz song. Eddie replied the respectable age of 13. Neil then asked him if he would mind playing with some other youngsters...and Betchadupa (Neil's sons band) came running on to the stage. History Never Repeats was one of the greatest moments of the concert. Betchadupa were so clearly loving it, as was Eddie who, when he wasn't singing went and stood near each of the band members. The drummer was going hard with Eddie dancing in front of him. The concert closed with about a 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour encore. Every single person on stage looked as if they were enjoying it so much. I can't even begin to describe the way all the different musicians gelled together. It felt like you were sitting in someones lounge watching some of your friends play their music. It had a really inTimate feel. The final song was Weather With You. Sung with a little help from the crowd, another song that you just know. Neil said that he was standing there with a smile on his face thinking how lucky he was, I think that we were the lucky ones too. The concert surpassed all my expectations, I don't think I will see anything like it again and I am so glad that I was there for the amazing experience it was. Just one last thing, seeing Eddie sing will tide me over for a little while longer but all I can say is: Eddie, come back soon and bring the rest of Pearl Jam with you too - its been far too long! David Shaw (djs70@hotmail.com): Hi all, I went to the first show of Neil Finn and guests week long shows on Monday, and it was well worth the $108 and the 10 hour train. the first half of the show was dominated by Neil performing songs mainly off his new album. After the first song he asked "are there any questions?" "Where's Eddie Vedder?!" was the reply. "He's here, and he's ready." was the response that received a huge cheer. Neil was amazing in himself as were all the other members of his international band, but I, and a lot of others were here to see Eddie, and he didn't disappoint. he started with Neil's brother Tim on piano, where Eddie sang an amazing and emotional version of the Split Enz classic 'Stuff and Nonsense' which a few people will recognise as an occasional tag to 'Daughter' (Melbourne 17/3/95). We were then treated to three Pearl Jam songs 'Around The Bend' 'Not For You' and a seven minute plus 'Parting Ways.' which were complete surprises, but none the less brilliant. Ed also lead the vocals on heavy punk versions of Split Enz songs 'History Never Repeats' and 'I Got You'which were played by Neil's teenage son's band Betchadupa, who played the songs to suit Eddie perfectly. great night just a pity I couldn't go to any of the other shows.
