April 6, Neil Finn Concerts; St. James Theatre, Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand
Meredith Bool (dweeb25@hotmail.com]: Please forgive me if this is all disjointed, or out of sequence. I have never written one of these before, and my memory fails me when I need it most!!!! Just bare with me:-) So, where do I start?? The start maybe?? Well, to start, I have to say that this show was the best thing I have ever seen in my 17 years of being on this earth. I’m still smiling from it! Alex (my brother) and I managed to get places standing in the second row, in front of Ed O’Brien. I thought Eddie was going to be on this side of the stage (the left), but I was wrong. It didn’t matter; we had a legendary view. Down in front of the stage were 3 (I think) security guards, saying we had to keep back from the stage; everyone did -- which was cool I thought. There was even breathing room -- no-one crowded or squashed people. While we were waiting for the show to start, it started to rain paper darts, which had “MAKE ME FLY” printed on them. Apparently this had something to do with the previous shows. Every time a dart reached the stage, everyone cheered -- the loudest when one got stuck in the curtain above the stage. The lights went out, and Neil came on stage first. I can’t remember what he sang, but after it (or maybe it was after he brought the others on -- minus Ed) he said something along the lines of “It’s Friday, we can do what we like” he also said how Friday was his favourite day, to which someone in the audience replied "I thought you said Wednesdays and Thursdays were your favourite." Anyway, on this note, they played an extended gig, which lasted until 12am. Neil introduced Eddie -- to which the crowd went nuts -- and he played ‘Take A Walk.’ Eddie came back on before the end of the first set and played ‘Better Man’ -- to what I think was perfection. Everyone sang. I think it was when he came on stage to play ‘Stuff and Nonsense,’ Eddie walked on with his hair done in the way Split Enz used to do theirs, and even had some of the moves sussed. He was wearing an old Split Enz shirt, which, when he turned around, revealed "The Splitz" printed on the back. Betchadupa walked on stage and together with Eddie, played ‘I Got You’, ‘History Never Repeats’ and ‘I See Red.’ These fully rocked the party! Betchadupa gave the songs a good feel, and you could see Ed was having a good time. The songs were played and sung to perfection (with audience participation on vocals -- of course!). The first encore had Ed and Neil singing ‘World Where You Live.’ Ed shared vocals with Neil on David Bowie’s ‘Golden Years’ in the second encore -- (I think). He also played his ukelele with Lisa Germano (who’s uke has some type of cow-print fur on it -- very cool) Unfortunately the show had to end, even though it was extended (being a Friday!!!). But I can honestly say that it was the trip of a lifetime!!! How often do you get to witness so many talented musicians from around the world play on the same stage -- with everyone having the time of their lives?? Going to this concert, and singing to the songs so many New Zealanders have grown up on definitely made me proud to some from this country -- imagine what it like for Neil and Tim Finn to hear it!
