September 1, 2001, Seattle, WA; The Breakroom
Tom Helm (Tbolt79@aol.com): Regan, Shawn (with one of his trademark hats), Stone, Mike and the rest of the collective known as Brad got up on stage at around 11:25 PM for the first time in a few years last night at the packed Seattle's Breakroom. The crowd was really into the show and I think Shawn and the troops really fed off of the energy. Needless to say the Brad fans were hungry after their hiatus. I know that they have been rehearsing, but it was almost like they never took a break from playing live shows, they sounded that good. They added a couple of role players, and please forgive me, I can't remember their names, but they added another guitarist/basist/key board player and someone who plays the bongos and tambourine. Brad is already a great sounding band live, and to have those two join them sure does compliment their sound. I don't have the complete set list or order of the songs, so I'll give some highlights. In all it was about a 2 hour set that included 19 songs from their previous 2 albums (Shame and Interiors...great albums, pick 'em up at your local record store) along with some new cuts and a couple Satchel songs. For the first song of the encore, Shawn broke out with an acoustic guitar and proceeded to address the crowd. "I wanna tell you a story, *pause* about Mr. Faded Glory." A big cheer swept through the room, "This is Seattle, isn't it?" Shawn then got into a bluesy rendition of "Crown of Thorns." He would strum a couple of times, sing a verse, strum a couple more times, sing another verse, etc. Myself and a few others around me was singing along with him, as were many others in the room I'm sure. Shawn played quite a bit of guitar, something that he didn't do the previous couple of times I've seen Brad, and he impressed me quite a bit. Stone was on top of his game, playing the role of lead during "The Day Brings" and "Sweet Al George." Stone also played bass on a song or two. Many other times he was playing rhythm guitar. Regan sounded great on the drums and the key boards. I think he was getting a little tired towards the extended end of "We," which was towards the end of the night, but he got through it just fine. "Secret Girl" and "Sweet Al George" were great up-tempo songs that really got a great response. Overall it was GREAT to see Brad live again, awesome show, great energy. Can't wait until their next record comes out! Cheers to Brad and here's to seeing them tour in the near future! I don't have a complete set list or order, but here are some of the songs they played: Secret Girl, 20th Century, Upon My Shoulders, Sweet Al George, We, Screen, Buttercup, The Day Brings, Crown of Thorns, and a couple Satchel songs along with some new ones... Mathieu Sylvain (tashro@hotmail.com): What a night! It was the second time that I went to see Brad; first time was at "Les Foufounes Electriques" in Montreal. I recently moved to the Vancouver area and I was on a road trip across Washington state for the long weekend. Needless to say that seeing Brad in Seattle was a real "must." Okay, they showed up a little bit late but who really cares, everybody was eager to hear again from the band...and I think that by the end of the show we all got what we came for! The same mix of energy and passion that I attended few years ago in Montreal was still there, even a good laugh when somebody shouted "Purple Rain!!" in the beginning - then somebody else answered right back with "...NOT YET!!!" Sure it would've been great to hear again this magical closer by Shawn but instead he gave us another great performance to remember with a 12-strings guitar and a "Crown of Thorns".... Thank you guys!...and a special thanks to the People of Seattle for their hospitality! |
