Throughout the Hendrix Tribute, there were several different combinations of different musicians on stage playing Hendrix music. Then it came Mike's turn. Mike and Buddy Miles, the original Band of Gypsies drummer and Billy Cox on bass. "Machine Gun." Mike started out slow, DID SOME SINGING! Then the guitar possessed him and he possessed the guitar. They both went spinning and running around the stage like a struggle, a fight, a passion unleashed. It was Mike at his best, which means it was Mike.

He was a little shy with the singing, but what he did not let loose verbally, he channeled it all into the playing. The Band of Gypsies live album version of "Machine Gun" is about 12 1/2 minutes. It seemed Mike played at least that long, if not longer. It soared so far above the rest of the tribute, which did have some great moments. At one point Mike unplugged with his twisting around and the tech ran out and plugged in. Mike said he was just fooling around anyway. It did sound and look exactly like professional fooling around, unrehearsed , raw with some dueling with the drummer. Yeah, when he went and dueled with Buddy, I shed a tear. It was a beautiful, once in a lifetime experience. He did Jimi proud and then some. Mike's "Machine Gun" epitomized what a true tribute is. If we can get a hold of the video, please, let's do it. Mesmerizing.
