A very long day of waiting in eager anticipation, turned out to be worth every single second! I met a PJ fan from Pennsylvania (who flew in specifically for the show). I spent the early afternoon in line with other diehards, then was shuttled into the bar (which proved to be unneccesarily stressful as fans vied for position in line). The result was a prime, unobstructed view in a club that was even smaller than i imagined. Before the show, Stone was walking around the club mingling, along with other notable Seattle residents including Kim Thayil (of Soundgarden), Brent Barry (of the Supersonics), and the U of W head football coach.

Pearl Jam began the night with the slower Can't Keep, followed by an AMAZING rendition of Save You, that rocked similar to the Letterman performance, but Mike McCready was all over the place! The intensity continued with Get Right, followed by Green Disease, which will be a live staple similar to Rearviewmirror. Before Love Boat Captain, Ed introduced Boom (which got resounding "Booooooom" calls from the crowd). He also spoke about how the money from the concert was going toward building a childrens playground in Hawaii, and then Ed said that there were to be signs posted not allowing smoking or drinking of alcoholic beverages...."So I'll probably never get to see it." LBC started out tender, but as it progressed toward the "lost 9 friends will never know" line, Ed look visibly distraught and the song transformed into an angrier version. Nothing As It Seems was downright spooky sounding, again with Mike McCready playing like he was from another planet! Throughout the show, Ed occasionally stepped back and just gave the stage to Mike. "You Are" was an entirely different monster, absolutely fun to listen to, but sounding funkier....almost like a Brad or Talking Heads number. This was where Matt and Stone really seemed to have fun! Given To Fly and Insignificance had their usual energy and crowd participation. The surprise for me was the resurrection of the Vs song "Blood", which despite an older PJ, still had all the rage it had in the mid 90s, turning into noise and chaos by the end of the song.

The first encore included a dedication by Ed to the owner of the jukebox that was responsible for playing Last Kiss the first time Ed heard it. Then it was Wishlist, followed by another beautiful rendition of Black, that sounds brilliant with the addition of Boom's keyboards. Ed let the crowd sing the second verse, and the band seemed invigorated during this song. Down was a fun tune, and we got to see Stone goof around a little bit while playing it. They ended with Do the Evolution, and a second encore led to the haunting song All or None, which has potential to be amazing live, but Ed kinda fucked up the beginning ("You all paid $32 to come and watch us practice").

I've seen PJ play live numerous times, but never in a small club. The energy is that room was hard to describe. The Riot Act songs sounded better live, and older songs had different twists and turns. Boom was more than accepted by the fans, who also had time to embarrass Ames with the "Jeff! Jeff!" chant. And Mike McCready played like he had a renewed commitment to rock music....he was simply never better! Thank you.
