Sept. 23, 2002; The Who Benefit for the Maryville Academy; House of Blues Chicago, Illinois
edved23@hotmail.com: All I can say is, I hope in 10 years Ed and the crew continue with this benefit because I was left wanting more. The guys played so well last night, although Stone seemed a bit stiff.** Unexpected opener with Last Kiss, but the PJ fans got excited with Insignificance (which was so well played) and Grievance. I am Mine is going to be a great live song, Stone appeared motionless during it.** By the way, although I don’t know much about this Boom character, he is rather animated and made quite an impression during Leaving Here and apparently this Green Disease song, which by the way sounds great. The set ended with an inspired Leaving Here and Yellow Ledbetter that always leaves you with that sad feeling because (except for those rare occasions) usually means no more Pearl Jam. Overall an awesome PJ experience. I must admit that I was disappointed with the fact that none of the guys came out and played with the Who, but hey, I wasn’t about to get greedy. The Who were excellent and the crowd really enjoyed them. Kudos to the Who fans who didn’t mind us jumping around during Not For You and Grievance and boos out to the old farts who didn’t let us get just a bit closer to the stage during Pearl Jam. Hey, for 400 freaking dollars, I wasn’t about to settle for just a good view of the stage. Hope you all enjoy the upcoming Riot Act. It opened up with a bang. - - - - - - - - - [**For anyone who didn't know, Stone couldn't make the show but a cardboard figure of him did. :) - Synergy] TMO (timohuiz@hotmail.com): I just want to reiterate that the show definately rocked, however it wasn't your typical PJ scene, since majority of people were there for The Who... During the introduction the MC looked over the crowd and said, "Now I know who the luckiest people in the world look like"!! Right then we all had smiles and knew we were in for a realll treat!!! The most energetic part of the show, I thought was Not For You into Better Man...I too along w/ whoever was around me, right side of stage like 8 rows back, even though their aren't rows...were rockin' these songs, jumping up and down and rockin' w/ the others around me...The Yellow Ledbetter is always an incredible song, but as the last review says once they play that one, you know most likely that they are done...However, they never ended it, and walked off the stage...So I was thinking Eddie was going to come out w/ Townsend and finish it off w/ The Who...Oh well... The Who rocked, my first Who show, and I also went to the Stones show at the Aragon when Bono came out during Rock and Roll, and I've to say that I believe The Who was more rockin'!! It definately will not be my last...Townsend is an animal w/ his windmills, tomahawks, jumpin around still doing rockstar kicks, at his age is so awesome!! Wailing the guitar away, just unbelievable!! Baba O Riley was incredible as well as Pinball Wizard and My Generation...And Roger is still sounding great w/ his vocals in Kids are Allright!! Oh and forgot this one, and that is Pearl Jam also did a tribute to The Who by playing the band's version of Leaving Here, Who covered it in ' 64!! I can't wait for their next tour, hopefully they'll stay true and play some small venues like the Aragon!!! Stay tuned... |
