Sept. 23, 2002; The Who Benefit for the Maryville Academy; House of Blues Chicago, Illinois
Melissa (KenWiltsieA@cs.com): The show at House of Blues was great which is good cause I flew to Chicago on Monday from San Francisco for that reason alone! The band sounded great, Ed's voice was perfect & they all looked happy to be there rockin' out, even Stone who was on stage in his smiling cardboard likeness. Ed thanked his bandmates for coming to Chicago & thanked The Who & Marysville Academy for giving them a reason to play. They opened with Last Kiss then, Insignificance, Grievance, I Am Mine, Love Boat Captain, new song, Not For You, Better Man, Yellow Ledbetter & Leavin' Here. Leavin' Here was a knockout & perfect for the venue, Grievance was strong & great, Love Boat Captain was interesting-in a good way-it takes me a few listenings to really grasp a song so I didn't fully comprehend the whole thing yet. Not For You was perfect. I believe the set list is right but I was outta my mind just to see them live in such an awesome venue, pogoing on the tiny sliver of space I had on the floor! After Last Kiss Ed joked that Stone 'was very one dimensional tonight' cracking up the place which was packed tight to the rafters. A great show which was painfully short for my taste - 45 - 50 min. with no encore (no Who encore either) & that just left me wanting more, cannot wait for Nov. 12 & the tour!! Much love, Melissa |
