February 19, 2003 - Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, Australia
Benjamin (benallan49@hotmail.com): February 19, 2003. What a night. I arrived at Rod Laver arena just in time to see the guys walking onstage, the atmosphere was amazing. Ed was armed with a bottle of wine and was clearly pumped up from the very beginning. Elderly woman was the first song played, the setlists are so unpredictable this tour, (Betterman was the opener last night) anyways it was great start and the crowd was very vocal. Mike was less animated than last night but he had a large group of fans just to his right who went crazy every time he faced them. He was clearly enjoying himself and by the end of the night he was running all over stage, behind the speakers, throwing away dozens of pics. For long periods Mike and Jeff just faced each other about a foot away and jammed. The first set included some great songs and some very cool extended jams. My highlight was an awesome version of I Got I.D, Once, which was a crowd pleaser and a very cool intro to Corduroy that Eddie plays well with his blue S.G. which we learned tonight has a name- "Rebecca." Luke the uke and Rebecca the guitar? The main set ended with "Blood" which was really intense with Eddie almost passing out after screaming violently for a few minutes. The guys were offstage for about 5 minutes, When they came back on Ed thanked the crowd again and congratulated so many Melbournians for joining in the recent peace rallies. First song after the break was "Bu$hleauger." Ed got the George Bush mask out danced around for a while, then put it on top of his mic stand before and I'm not sure how to describe this, he pretended George Bush was giving him oral pleasure and with the microphone in the masks mouth, it looked kinda realistic, he then beat the mask up. "Sleight of hand" was a big surprise, Ed needed to run back and get his note book but the vocals were fantastic, I think Stone even did a small solo, sort of like a lead break that you would expect from Mike, very cool. "Daughter" was a great sing a long, it ended with a bit of Pink Floyd and the crowd loved it, actually by this stage the crowd was at fever pitch and being just a few rows back it was a great experience. I'm struggling to remember the order of the songs but "Throw Your Arms Around Me" was played after the second encore, a song by a local band (Hunters and Collectors) it was played by just Eddie and Boom and was a definite highlight. The lights came on and I was expecting Yellow Ledbetter but when the first notes of "Alive" were played the crowd went wild, the no standing on seat rules were being ignored everywhere and the whole stadium just rocked out, thousands of people just lost in the music, amazing. With the lights on I thought the show was finished but I noticed a roadie give Stone another guitar and the band continued with "Fuckin Up," it was a great way to finish, although Ed didn't actually fuck up much tonight unlike "Wishlist" last night-"I wish I was the full moon you kept your house keys on!" all the guys were in great spirits and they've honestly never sounded better. All in all one of the best experiences of my life. peace-Benjamin. |
