Mark Oudshoorn (oudshoorn@hotmail.com):

After being up in the heavens for last night's show - Upper, Row JJ - tonight's seats on the floor, Row U represented a massive change, and a chance to get much closer to the guys I also thought tonight would be a more 'traditional' setlist after last night's... However I don't think such a thing exists anymore. What is expected of them? What do PJ expect of themselves? What should a crowd expect to hear? After tonight's concert, where they played 26 songs, and 16 of them - yes, SIXTEEN - were not played last night, all I can say is, expect the unexpected!

We were treated to another unorthodox opener in Elderly Woman Great stuff! Then a rare airing of Interstellar Overdrive, by the end of which I was drooling at the thought of Corduroy's opening refrain, which duly kicked in. Save You followed it up, the guys sounding easily as good as last night, although seemingly more relaxed, Mike and Jeff especially. Given To Fly came next, and then Cropduster, which actually sounded a bit laboured - maybe needs to be played a little faster live? NAIS was next, and that came across brilliantly. Stadium rock at its purest, with Mike nailing each and every solo between verses. It was time to up the tempo, and what better to do it with than Even Flow? Again, McCready is in his element here, and Ed took time out with a smoke and some wine to appreciate the skill of the lead axeman. The new tracks I Am Mine and LBC came back-to-back, with more intensity than last night, not as haunting, but still brilliantly executed.

A notable from last night was Ed's relative 'quietness' - he didn't speak much to the audience. Tonight, though, he was much more expansive. He told us that the next song was about a US City (I can't remember!) that doesn't have a mayor - the same way that Australia doesn't have a prime minister, we have a prostitute! That got a great response Anyway, the song in question was Lukin, followed by the bluesy Not For You, a great combo. Light Years followed, again sounding a little laboured - not sure if the newer mid-tempo songs work as well live as the older ones You Are next, again with the awesome lighting display. The next song was almost a sure thing to be played tonight - Daughter And what a fantastic tag, with Ed not only treating us to a typical Ed vs Crowd singalong (Hey - hey, heeeeeey - heeeeeey), but then just one verse of Another Brick in the Wall. The crowd were lapping it up. Four songs right out of the box to finish the first set - I Got ID, 1/2 Full, Once and Blood. Those last two harking right back to the early years, with both performances still full of the spark and urgency you would expect.

After reading the fanviews from the earlier shows, I was hanging for the guest appearance of one George.W.Bush, and he appeared first song of the encore. This was the funniest moment of the night, with Ed firstly pulling some silky dance moves with the Bush mask on, then perching it on the mike stand whilst singing with it, throwing a few punches in its direction, and finally lowering it to his groin to simulate Bush giving Ed... pleasure. I think it was after this song, may have been at another time, that Ed said he appreciated the efforts of Australians trying to keep Bush on a tight leash. He then told us that Americans wouldn't even know Australia support their cause for war, which drew an angry response from the crowd 'Fuck the US!' was heard all around me. Another rarity, Sleight of Hand, followed, with Ed requesting the lyrics from his song book, just in case. He managed pretty well anyway. We then got a treat with Betterman and the Save it for Later tag, with Ed singing 'Runaway, runaway, runaway' faster than I've ever heard.. Evolution followed that, with a massive surprise in Spin the Black Circle next, the crowd was rocking at this stage. Absolutely going mental.

We were treated to a second encore tonight, and boy what an experience. Firstly, Ed comes out with just him and Boom, I thought it might be Indifference, but no... Throw Your Arms Around Me! The boys reunited on stage for one last fling, and as the house lights went up, the opening chords to 'Alive' electrified the audience. 10,000 people sang each and every word with Ed, I can't wait to hear the bootleg. And just when we thought it was all over, I saw Stone swap guitars for the last time... Fuckin Up was an awesome song to finish on, with Ed smashing the shit out of two tambourines, and then hurling them in to the audience The crowd were absolutely apeshit. Overall I thought the guys seemed to be a lot more relaxed, a lot less on edge, than last night Whether that made it a better show, I don't know Either way, I witnessed two of the best rock shows ever...
Thank You!!! Cheers Mark
