February 20, 2003 - Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, Australia
Claire (mrs_vedder@hotmail.com): Another truly amazing night. Totally different to Melbourne 2. This show left me speechless. Even today, I am sitting typing this in total awe. The band were really grooving last night, playing songs that were SO not expected - some of which I had almost forgotten :-) Cant Keep is definitely fast becoming one of the best openers. It really got the crowd going before the band jumped into the pure rock of Breakerfall and Save You. Save You got the band and the crowd really fired up. Then it went a bit slower. When I heard the first few chords of Dissident I almost fainted. One of my all time favourites, it was played with so much emotion... Time for Small Town. You could hardly hear Eddie singing because the crowd was singing so loudly. There I was with a grin from ear to ear (I actually think that grin started at Cant Keep and went all the way to Yellow Ledbetter!!!). Corduroy and Even Flow again had the crowd and band going off. Mike really loving the long jam sessions in the middle of Even Flow, Porch (!) and RVM. I noticed Ed crouched down on the other side of the stage during RVM totally mesmerised by Mike and his beautiful guitar. The whole band seemed to love it as much as we did. Sent shivers down my spine. Whipping was fired, the crowd jumping higher and higher. Then still with the buzz of Whipping, the boys played Betterman. Unlike other nights, Ed hogged the whole first verse, but then let us do "this bit" (the first chorus). Amazing... Rival was one of the songs I'd almost forgotten about and had to really rack my brains for the words. But two lines into the song, it all came back to me. Insignificance got us pumped again before the most amazing version of Porch. A song someone before the show hinted that they may play because they heard them in the sound check. Still a surprise that it came when it did. I thought they may have used it as the finale! Evolution again was a highlight with the Bush mask and Ed doing his funny dance moves. At this stage he said that he'd had a call from John Howard, that he'd offered to give him oral sex because he "seems to have a thing for American men these days!" The crowd went nuts. Then came Breath. OMIGOD! I hadn't heard this song in years. What a beautiful song. I thought Sate of Love and Trust would follow, but no, Footsteps was next and I have to say, if you have not ordered the CD, order it just for this song. Awesome. Rocking version of RVM with Mike in his element (I agree that he may just be trying to show off, but if I were that good, I'd be showing off too!!!). Soon Forget and Yellow Ledbetter left me wanting more, but after the longest jam session and lots of waves, it was time for the boys to go. Ed left saying "I love you" and I'm so sure I was not the only one that said it back. Another night of total bliss. Thank you Pearl Jam for giving me two of the best nights of my life........................... |
