February 23, 2003 - Burswood Dome, Perth, Australia
Des Harris (diver50@openaccess.com.au): Well, after several years of listening to countless Pearl Jam albums and concerts, the moment I had anticipated for a long time finally came last night. I missed out on tickets for the tour in 98', but after sleeping out for tickets this time, my seats six rows from the front gave me the opportunity to have surely the greatest concert experience of my life. Large numbers of the crowd seem to arrive late for last night's show, but by the time PJ hit the stage the Dome felt capacity, and was buzzzing with anticipation. When the guys walked on the noise was almost unbearable, as 19,000 fans released the emotions of excitement and anticipation brewing since the announcement of the show in November. The opener couldn't have been better, as the D chord of Long Road drifted out across Perth. Save You and God's Dice heightened the noise level and excitement in the Dome once again, as the crowd gradually became more vocal. Then came the most fulfilling string of songs as PJ gave us Corduroy, Given to Fly and the energetic Even Flow. I thought at this point that it couldn't get any better! I could have gone home then and been satisfied! Given to Fly surely had to be a highlight. It had everyone singing and still remains to be my favourite song of all time. Even Flow saw all the slightly older and true hardcore fans (including myself) go absolutely nuts. By this stage Stone, Mike and Eddie had become really intense on stage and leaps into the air especially by Mike were frequent. The boys then flew into Get Right and eased into the very clever Cropduster, as the madness from Even Flow temporarily ceased. I felt one really pleasing aspect of last night's show was that the guys played the best songs off the new album. Then again they could have played anything and it wouldn't have really mattered. Possibly the biggest surprise of the night for me was Jeremy which again threw Perth into a frenzy. Eddie asked the crowd to sing along before the song began, if we knew the words. Come on Eddie! Of course we do! Small town was a highlight as Eddie fittingly dedicated the song to anyone who lived in the small WA town of Yallingyup, or at least that's what I think he said?? Then came the long awaited I Am Mine and Love Boat Captain, since I have never heard these songs live before. They blew me away of course, in true Pearl Jam style! The lighting especially during Love Boat Captain was simply beautiful and I think the guys really enjoyed playing this one. From here came a wonderful combination of eight random songs off different albums as the show rolled on. The highlights however were certainly Wishlist when the crystal ball came down, the cryptic You Are, and the powerful Insignificance and explosive Go before the encore break. Habit was also a big surprise as Eddie's vocals and Matt's drumming really let lose, and 1/2 Full was also a very special song on the night for some reason, even though the crowd didn't seem to get much out of it. It was just so well played I guess. Wishlist was beautiful as everyone sang along and Go sent Mike into solo madness before PJ left the stage. Before the guys returned to the stage for their encore, a great rumble came from the back of the Dome as thousands in the grandstands began banging their feet whilst cheering for more. This sent a shiver down everyone's spine I'm sure. Of course the guys came back and after Eddie kindly sent some supporting messages to us all about saving Ningaloo Reef, the band appropriately jumped into Do the Evolution sending everyone again into a frenzy. At this stage I could sense Betterman, and sure enough it was next to the delight of everyone in the stadium. Typically, Eddie didn't have to sing too much as the huge crowd filled the lyrics for him. Stone really seemed to be enjoying himself during this song also. Not being cruel, but I'm sure this was the only song some of the competition winners up the front knew, so at least they were now happy! After Betteman came the biggest relief of the night as the guys played Daughter. For some reason, when it got to the later stages of the show, I just felt as if they weren't going to play this song, so I was thrilled when they did because of course its a favourite. Eddie received some great crowd evolvement during this song towards the end. The end of the show was certainly the best as Pearl Jam gave the true fans a treat with the cover of Crazy Mary, followed by a somewhat emotional Throw Your Arms Around Me with Mark Seymour which everyone enjoyed. But then came certainly the greatest moments of my life when Pearl Jam belted out Alive to the joy of everyone under the house lights. I think when the opening chords were played, the lid was blown off the city of Perth and surely the Dome. I thought that place was going to pop! A long smile certainly filtered across my face. A wonderful end was marked when PJ joined with Johnny Marr for the final song of Fortunate Son, a classic by Creedence. This I tell you is better than Yellow Ledbetter and Rockin' in the Free World, if you have the right crowd, and we certainly had the right crowd last night. Those in the stands up top had rushed down to their barriers and were jumping in amazement! There was a greater atmosphere than anything I can remember. Just picture 19,000 people with their hands above their heads clapping to the final chords of Pearl Jam. It was something else I tell you, and an experience that I know will stay with me for the rest of my life. I left feeling just so satisfied and lucky to be there and I knew I would never go to a concert as good as that again. Thankyou Pearl Jam for those memories last night and for the great sounds I've heard over the last 12 years from you guys. Come Back Soon!!! |
