February 23, 2003 - Burswood Dome, Perth, Australia
N Jivan (namjiv@iprimus.com.au): Firstly thank you Pearl Jam and thank you Ten club. Having gone to the three shows previous to Perth I recognise that this performance was definitely up there and the seats we had were just incredible. Comparing the shows the band were really on fire tonight and much more intense versions of the songs. Unlike the Melbourne shows Stone was actually moving and really getting into it. Mike was ever so play with the crowd from the get go. Playing around while strumming to long road and what seamed like almost random pointing to get the crowd going throughout the night. Jeff was his active self while Matt was Matt ever so perfect behind those drums. Lets start from the beginning. Long road, release and oceans are my fav opening songs so it was great to at least hear one of the three in the shows. Couldn't ask for a much better rendition. Save you totally rocked, from here I wasn't sure if they were ever going to slow down which they really never did because to follow came God's Dice and corduroy. GTF was followed up by one of the best versions of even flow I can remember. The solo was so on. I think it was great because the tempo of the show hadn't gone down yet and this just added an amazing lift to the crowd. Sometime during all this Ed said hi to the crowd, mentioning that this was going to be the last show in Australia "saving the best for last." They ended 98 tour in Perth which "worked out well and thought why not do the same" this tour. The last Perth show in 98 was the last show without Matt, so Matt was introduced to Perth. Ed said they came all this way to play in something similar to the Hindenburg, he said they will try to burst it with their performance. Then mentioned that they had a similar stadium in Seattle called the King Dome, and that got demolished. To which he started laughing, possibly because we still have one. Don't worry Ed the Dome is getting demolished by the end of the year, we wont have outdated stadiums too. Get Right and Cropduster were perfect follow ups to Even Flow. Jeremy may have been introduced as an old song, maybe you can sing along???? I think he said this to one song but I cant remember which one. Small Town was dedicated to those who come from Yellingup, a town SW of Perth. I assume the band stayed there the previous days given that they did that last time they came here and Ed loves to surf. This was the first time I have heard small town being played live without Ed stuffing up the song. I have heard it played six times now and the last five times Ed made a mistake to his amusement or annoyance. No slowing down for IAM and LBC. LBC was definitely memorable. By this stage I am thinking there should be slower songs to come from past performances. WRONG!!! MFC and habit (with improv) followed suggesting they were trying their hardest to burst the dome. Then came one of my favs from Riot Act, You Are I just love this song. When I first heard the album I had this song on repeat straight away and am ecstatic that I have heard it three times live. Wishlist is so atmospheric with the disco ball effect. Every time I have heard this song on the 03 tour the crowd just loves the lighting. 1/2 Full got its introduction as a new song about the environment talking to you. Go was a perfect cap off to the main set keeping in line with the high energy. During DTE someone threw a face mask of the Australian PM (John Howard) on stage. Ed noticed what it was and quickly put it on. He then proceeded to grab his groin and gestured towards the crowd. The mask was then thrown back into the crowd. DTE is rightfully becoming a popular song with the fans and tonight's version justified why its popularity is rising. Better Man had its sing a long. Daughter had that "hey hey" sing a long tag too. But Ed should of remembered the lack of timing with Perth Audiences from the last time here (he stop singing Patriot to get the crowd to clap in time. He gave up and told us to stop clapping). The crowd timing was nowhere near as good as the 2nd Melbourne show, where they crowd managed to pull off some amazing "hey," "ha's" and "hum's" combinations. Crazy Mary was played after a quick alteration to the set. Ed then proceeded to pass a bottle of wine to the front row and people back stage. Talking of people back stage I spotted former Chicago Bulls centre Luc Longley who was born and now lives in Perth. Crazy Mary brought the end of a very short first encore. During the break we noticed that they were setting up a second mike stand. Ed comes out with Mark Seymour (song writer) playing TYAAM. Ed introduces him saying he only met him today and it was an honour to finally meet him and play the song with him. It was a truly special moment. By this point I am hoping for Black given how well Mike is doing but then came the familiar riff of Alive crowd went nuts and the boys really got in to it. To finish up Johnny Marr came out and helped perform a great version of fortunate son. A great last four shows by the band and an amazing final show to the Australia leg of the tour. I thank the band, Ten Club, the crowd and especially Cherry for making it truly memorable. Hope you enjoyed your first PJ experience. Couldn't ask for a better night or better a week for that matter. See you next time boys in 2007. Lets not make it five years lads, four is much easier to handle. Three maybe even better. |
