April 1, 2003 - Pepsi Center; Denver Colorado
beartrax79@usa.net: No April Fools here... We started off the evening with Ed sneaking around on the side of the stage while Sleater-Kinney were doing they're thing. Basically, their sound is pretty close from song to song, unless they aren't singing. Then, it seems, the musical talent of this band kicks WAY up. Later in their set, this is exactly what happened, and the crowd got into it accordingly. Then, PJ hit the stage. The first song, Love Boat Captain, is still in my head this afternoon (the next day). Once again, I am blown away by this group. My first concert was the Randall's Island Show #1 in 1996. Ever since then, I figured Pearl Jam could only go downhill from there. However, I am proven wrong every time. To start with (what my friends and I like to do at a PJ show) is see how long they run: Set (90 mins) + 1st Encore(30 mins) + 2nd Encore (20 mins) = 2hours and 20 mins. Remember folks, this counts the talking Eddie did as well. It seemed to me that he did quite a bit of talking this time (compared to my previous shows), most likely since our world/nation situation has changed since they've returned from overseas. There were talks about now being the edge of forever. There was lecturing on freedom of speech. There were songs of SUVs being able to carry 13 people but only ever carrying 1. There were talks of War Vets and lack of social evolution. Eddie even tossed a big NO! into the microphone when the crowd was singing the line from Rockin in the Free World, "... got fuel to burn, got roads to drive." These are all just great examples of Pearl Jam once again letting the world know that they have a voice to be heard. Onto the show, the set list was the usual flip-flop of old song/new song that I have come to expect from a PJ show. The funny thing is that everyone there knows all the words already, so I'm sure it is hard to tell the difference from a newcomer's perspective. The band absolutely rocked out Even Flow to the best I have ever seen it done. I found myself trying to dial my cell fast enough to let my guitarist friend in on the solo. I was impressed by You Are the most. I never thought that song would be manageable outside of the studio, but it sounded great. The band was absolutely phenomenal. Muchos Kudos to all... only, I wish I knew the name of the man on keyboard. Man, did he live it up in the second encore. Eddie also hit some notes dead on that I thought were gone the days of most of my flannel shirts. I think his voice is stronger than ever. I believe a nice 'up yours' should go out to all those critics out there saying that his voice was going to die after the No Code tour! I'm not sure if it is a regularly scheduled appearance, but all fans be ready for a show when Ed ducks off stage for a bit. No someone will not be robbing a bank on stage... Before I close off my recap, I have to say again that I am always in awe of this band. Despite being biased, I will look forward to continue to listen to what they have to say in the future and how great they're going to sound then. Lastly, I have my favorite quote of the evening: "@$%#. (looks up at the crowd, a little perplexed) That's a hard chord." -Eddie Vedder, singing Soon Forget See you in West Palm Beach... Pat: This was the first year that I am an official "Pearl Jam Fan Club Member" and I wanted to thank the Ten Club for getting me floor seating at last nights show. I've been to six of their shows and this one, next to the Red Rocks Amp show in 96, (The first show that Pearl Jam ever started a show sitting down while jamming ((lasted only a few songs b/c Gossard couldn't keep still)) was the best show I've seen thus far. I am very jealous of the fans that are going to get to see them for the rest of the year. I have most of their Bootlegs and I have to recommend to fans to buy this bootleg. I've listened to every Even Flow jam that Mike rocked out on, however, this solo blows them all away. Even Gossard and Eddie stood on the side of the stage with big smiles on their faces during his jam. I was thrilled regarding how hard Mike jammed in Corduroy, Porch, Crazy Mary and Given to fly as well. I wonder if the war had gotten them all worked up, because they were in rare form. Eddie even mentioned that he couldn't believe how loud it was at the Pepsi Center. Even though he was drunk and botched a few lyrics during the show, he made up for it considerably as he wailed; Save You and Evolution. Lot of jumping around by Mike, Jeff and Eddie. He played a cruel April Fools Joke by saying that this was their farewell tour. Honestly, buy this bootleg. He was passing wine around during the show, almost caught a fluorescent light thingy that was thrown at him, and told an idiot not to tell him to shut-up! They seemed very happy and thrilled to be alive and so was I. What a show... Pat/Littleton CO Amaro Montemayor: Hello, fellow jammers!! First of all have to thank 10c for the awesome tickets-THANKS!!! Now, for starters, Sleater Kinney were pretty cool. Haven't heard a whole lot from them but they were jamming. But... When PJ hit the stage, AMAZING!!! The set list was awesome. Treats for me were, Save You-Green Disease-Given To Fly-You Are----Ah hell, who am I kidding. It was all good. The improvisations/extended versions---excellent!!! The only thing I didn't anticipate was all the new PJ gear. Man, I needed at least a few hundred more dollars cuz I wanted one of everything. I'll see you all in Chicago and I'll be prepared this time. Joanne Owens: Thank you Thank you Thank you!! Thanks Pearl Jam, thanks Tenclub and Thanks Sleater-Kinney!!The show was wahhhhhhh---unbelievable!! For all Pearl Jammers everywhere---hold onto your hats this tour!! As you see on the setlist above the show was amazing! First off, while standing in line for Tenclub tickets, my hubby and I met so many wonderful people--and got to sit with a few of them---Denise and Bobby---from Vail--thanks sooo much for the disposable camera!! and the girl from El Paso---hope to see you in Phoenix!! We flew in from Tucson and would have walked---the show was that good!! Highlights were : the opening of the first show of the US tour was Love Boat Captain!!! It was breathtaking!! We really felt the LOVE! other highlights---Mike's guitar solos---he was really on--- full of energy and ear to ear happy!! I am Mine was beautiful, Porch and the Sleater-Kinney tag was explosive ---Bu$hleaguer was extremely entertaining--and drove the point home at the same time---(and Ed seemed to have a great time doing the whole "Lounge Guy" thing).
We had excellent seats on the floor thanks to Tenclub----and after this show, you will never hear me complain about seats ---there was not a bad seat in the house!! Crazy Mary was another highlight----Ed's vocals were as if he hadn't sang it in years---clear as a Denver morning and very touching---finally, Keep on Rockin in the Free World---rocked the house---we were happily hoarse by the end of that song!!! It was one big sing a long!! One other thing----during a song earlier on---Ed asked us to sing along ---that it would feel sooo good----did it ever!!! Oh and when Ed thanked us for listening to their songs and the "shit" he talked about in between--it wasn't "shit" at all---its what we need to hear---PEACE---I hope everyone gets a chance to check out this tour---ALL WE NEED IS LOVE! |
